Ernst was a son of the Prussian major general Johann Braun (1771-1835) and his second wife Marie, née Michelsen (1784-1833).

Military career

After attending the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin, Braun joined the 1st Company of the Guard Pioneer Department of the Prussian Army as a pioneer on April 1, 1834 . For further training he graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School for one year from October 1834 and on September 22, 1835 he became Portepeefähnrich .
