history

According to oral tradition, the name of the sucos comes from the Portuguese colonial times. When a Portuguese asked the local Liurai the name of the place, he asked the European what was the most powerful thing in his country. The Portuguese said "the state" ( Portuguese Estado ), whereupon the Liurai declared that his territory would be called "Estado".

On November 16, 2006, a serious incident was reported from Estado that had occurred a few days earlier. Youngsters from Colimau 2000 - an organization founded by former underground youth activists - from Ermera and elsewhere - attacked an offshoot of the Perguruan Setia Hati Terate (PSHT) Martial Arts Club in the village of Estado. Prime Minister José Ramos-Horta said, according to unconfirmed information, there were four dead. Ten houses were also burned down. Ramos-Horta had flown to the scene of the attack in a helicopter to get an idea of the situation. Special police forces have been deployed to the region. One witness reported that around 600 young people from Colimau 2000 attacked the Martial Art Club, armed with samurai swords, machetes, spears, bows and arrows and rifles. The attack appears to have been an act of revenge. On November 2, PSHT members beat up a member of Colimau 2000.

politics

In the elections of 2004/2005 was Antonio Maia dos Santos elected Chefe de Suco and in 2009 re-elected.

economy

An important commodity: coffee from Ermera

On May 23, 2004, President Xanana Gusmão and Prime Minister Marí Alkatiri opened one of the largest coffee processing plants with wet processing of the coffee in Estado . The owner and operator is the Cooperativa Café Timor ( CCT ), East Timor's largest cooperative with around 20,000 planters as members.

The factory in Estado buys coffee fruits from members of the CCT in the highlands of the municipality of Ermera. In the factory, the fruits are washed, the pulp removed, the beans fermented and prepared for drying. Together with the factory in Maubisse , CCT can buy 25,000 tons of coffee, twice as much as in 2003.
