Esther Väärälä , b. Kantor , (born January 17, 1985 in Vienna ) is an Austrian ice hockey player who has been under contract with EHV Sabers Vienna in the Elite Women's Hockey League since 2017 . She has been married to Finnish ice hockey coach Mika Vääräla since summer 2017 and changed her name from Kantor to Väärälä.

Career

Esther Väärälä began her ice hockey career with EHV Sabers Vienna , with whom she became Austrian champion in 2004 and won the 2004 newly founded Elite Women's Hockey League . In 2005 another championship title followed with the Sabers, before she decided to move to the National Women's Hockey League , where she was active for the Québec Avalanche in the 2005/06 season .

After a year in North America, she returned to the Sabers and won a number of other championship titles in Austria and the EWHL by 2016.

After the 2015/16 season, she decided to move within the EWHL to KMH Budapest . In recognition of her achievements for the Sabers, she was made honorary captain in summer 2016 and her jersey number (# 23) was blocked. A year later she returned to the Sabers and was given her number 23 again.

International

Esther Väärälä is the record player of the Austrian women's national team with 158 games . She took part in eleven world championships until 2016 and made it with the national team in 2004 from Division III to Division II and in 2008 from Division II to Division I.
