Theophilus Eugene Anton von Podbielski (* 17th October 1814 in Cöpenick ; † 31 October 1879 in Berlin ) was a Prussian cavalry general , Church President of the General Artillery Committee, member of the National Defense Commission and first curator of the United Artillery and Engineering School at Berlin.

Life

origin

He came from the former Polish noble family Podbielski . His parents were the Prussian lieutenant colonel a. D. Anton von Podbielski (1780–1841) and his wife Johanna Eleonore, née von Falkenhayn (1787–1869).

Military career

Podbielski attended the Sulechów Pedagogy and the Liegnitz Knight Academy . On May 1, 1831, he joined the 1st Uhlan Regiment of the Prussian Army . He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on February 9, 1833 , after passing the "With the Most High Commendation" exam. He was barely 19 years old. From 1836 to 1839 Podbielski graduated from the General War School . In 1841 he was appointed adjutant of the 5th Cavalry Brigade . He came to the Adjutantur, in 1855 he was appointed major in the General Staff of III. Army Corps and 12 January 1858 commander of the Thuringian Hussar Regiment No. 12 . In 1859 promoted to lieutenant colonel and in 1861 to colonel , Podbielski received command of the 16th Cavalry Brigade in March 1863 while being promoted to major general . In December 1863 he became the senior quartermaster of Field Marshal Friedrich von Wrangel in the Prussian army in Schleswig-Holstein , which would later play a role in the German-Danish War . Podbielski remained as Chief of Staff in the Elbe Duchies until 1865 and then became Major General and in 1866 Director of the General War Department in the War Ministry .

During the German War Podbielski was Quartermaster General of the Army and received the order Pour le Mérite for his work on September 18, 1866 . After the peace treaty he returned to the war department, became lieutenant general in 1867 and did great service in the reorganization of the army in the North German Confederation . At the same time he took part in the work of the Federal Council and in the Reichstag .

During the Franco-Prussian War , Podbielski was reappointed General Quartermaster of the Army. His dispatches from the theater of war are of historical value . For his services in this war he received an endowment of 100,000 thalers and on March 5, 1871 the oak leaves for the order Pour le Mérite. In 1872 Podbielski was appointed inspector general of the artillery and in 1873 general of the cavalry. Under Podbielski, the artillery recorded the separation of field artillery from fortress artillery and the re-arming of field artillery.

In 1889 the field artillery regiment No. 5 was given its name.
