The Europaregion Tirol-Südtirol-Trentino ( Italian: Euregio Tirol-Alto Adige-Trentino ) was founded in 1998 with the aim of promoting cross-border cooperation between the Tyrolean regions in Austria ( North and East Tyrol , now the state of Tyrol ) and in Italy ( South Tyrol and Trentino ).

overview

The cooperation of the three governors in almost all areas is also intended to strengthen the cultural identity of the people in the region. Common state parliaments take place, the so-called "Dreierlandtage" or "Viererlandtage" (with Vorarlberg ), and the common cultural and political life is also deepened.

Due to the European Union and the Schengen area , the importance of the state border in the Tyrolean area is declining. In addition, as the common currency , the euro also contributes to the region's economic integration. In 2011 the European region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino was also institutionalized in the form of a European Association of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC). The EGTC is an association of countries planned by the EU, with which cooperation can be raised to a higher, institutional level.

The three countries have had a joint liaison office in Brussels since 1995.

In July 2014, Governors Arno Kompatscher , Ugo Rossi and Günther Platter invited people to a two-day event at Prösels Castle to discuss the Europe of the Regions , with the aim of the European Region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino to play a pioneering role. Relevant experts and thought leaders could be won for the event. Political celebrities from Vienna and Rome also met to ensure their support for the EGTC project.

Territorial expansion

The three countries of the region: Tyrol South Tyrol Trentino

Today the European region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino defines itself as the sum of the two provinces Trentino, South Tyrol and the state of Tyrol. The European region extends over an area of 26,245 km² and has 1,809,849 inhabitants. The gross domestic product is 67.6 billion euros.

The European region was originally founded together with Vorarlberg . So in 1991 there was the first four-member state parliament in Merano. As early as in the course of the second Viererlandtag in Innbruck in 1993, the President of the Vorarlberg State Parliament, Bertram Jäger, announced the desire for selective and thus reduced cooperation . Quotation from the minutes: He justified Vorarlberg's stance by pointing out that in addition to the Euregio Tyrol, a Euregio Bodensee was also emerging and that Vorarlberg, for historical, cultural and geographical reasons, felt more like the latter and wanted to work there. This clear commitment to the Euregio Bodensee does not rule out participation by Vorarlberg in the context of the Viererlandtag, only this cooperation must be reduced, selective, i.e. limited to those areas that also directly affect and interest Vorarlberg. President Jäger added that a repositioning or rethinking of the role of Vorarlberg in the context of the Viererlandtag is essential and also in the interests of the other three partners, since Vorarlberg in no way acts as a brake or hindrance and thereby restricts the leeway of the other three state parliaments would like to. From then on, Vorarlberg limited itself to the role of observer, but always sent its state parliament president to the following Dreierlandtag .

Parishes and the year of change of province

Even if not officially emphasized, there is a certain historical connection with those communities that were separated from the original area under Italian fascism: the three Ladin communities of Souramonts (today the province of Belluno ), the community of Pedemonte (today the province of Vicenza ), and the Municipalities of Magasa and Valvestino (both now in the province of Brescia ). In autumn 2014, at the Dreierlandtag in Schwaz, it was decided to give the three communities of Souramont an observer role in order to increase cooperation. Furthermore, in March 2015 the province of Belluno asked to be admitted as an observer.

Other supraregional projects and organizations

In terms of cross-lingual, supraregional cooperation in the European context, the EGTC interacts with other cooperative, partly overlapping, partly complementary projects. There are to be mentioned

Presidency

The presidency rotates between member countries every two years. The country holding the presidency also provides the general secretary.
