Gospel key
A gospel key is an overview of the subjects and references in the four gospels of the New Testament of the Bible . With its help, the reader should be able to orientate himself more quickly and easily within the Gospels when studying the Bible . Gospel keys can be found in selected editions of the Bible .
The gospel key presented here in the article is based heavily on the section of the same name in more recent editions of the Herder Bible . This Gospel Key tries to break down the content of the four Gospels, following a time axis, into nine large groups. The positions refer to the Gospels of Matthew , Mark , Luke and John and there in each case to the first verse of a section. The biblical passages link to the online text of the Elberfeld Bible and the standard translation .

Prehistory and childhood
An angel announces her pregnancy to Mary . The child was jumping in her tummy when she visited her relative Elisabeth. This is followed by the birth of Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem , the circumcision , naming and the flight to Egypt . Jesus later grew up in Nazareth . The twelve-year-old Jesus aroused astonishment when he argued with scribes during the Passover festival in the temple in Jerusalem .

Public life of Jesus
Jesus enters the public perception of history. Markus dates the event formulaically with the words in those days . Luke puts it in a world-historical context: it was in the 15th year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius . Matthew uses the family tree of Jesus for dating . Three evangelists report that after his baptism and a forty-day fast, Jesus was led into the desert by the devil . There he resists its temptations. Going out of Capernaum , where he in-law of Peter heals, it passes through the province of Galilee . There he calls his disciples, and some women also accompany him: Maria Magdalena , Johanna the wife of Chuzas, Susanna and many others. He meets people, teaches them, heals the sick and casts out demons. According to the Gospel of John, he attends the feasts in Jerusalem as a devout Jew and is on the way in the province of Judea .

The parables
His parables are at the heart of Jesus' sermons. Many images, such as water, vine, wine, bread and the good shepherd, draw from the Old Testament . The Gospel of John knows no parables in the sense mentioned here.

Suffering and dying
In Jerusalem, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples . He is captured on the Mount of Olives and three times denied by Peter. Pontius Pilate , the governor of the Roman emperor, and the Jewish high council condemn him to death. He is crucified, dies, and is buried in a rock grave nearby.

Silesian proverb
You won't get that out with the gospel key either. This saying , which was used in Silesia at least until the 19th century, goes back to a Silesian superstition . Then the householder locks himself in his room if something has been stolen from a house. He opens the Gospel of John, puts an inherited key in it, and closes the Bible again. Now he is calling out the names of all those he suspects. The one whose name the key moves is the thief.
