FEI Nations Cup 2016 (Eventing)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2016 in eventing (2016 FEI Nations Cup ™ Eventing) was the fifth season of the Nations Cup for eventing .

Course of the tournament series

For the first time, the tournament series not only included special stages in Europe, but also a United States Nations Cup. Most of the special stages were  advertised as CICO 3 *, only the final stage was carried out differently as CCIO 3 *. In 2016, the series extended from March 23 to October 9 and thus comprised the entire green season (period in which riding tournaments can be held outside of halls due to weather conditions).

In the evaluation tests, the winning team received 100 points each, the following teams received a descending number of evaluation points. For each rider who did not finish the test, the teams received 1000 minus points in the test. This ensured that all teams finished with a result and received evaluation points for the Nations Cup.

The exams

1st test: France

At the beginning of the tournament season, from March 23 to 25, 2016, the Nations Cup series was opened with the French Nations Cup tournament. The tournament took place under the name The Crazy Ride in Fontainebleau .

In the nations ranking there was a duel between France and Germany. After the terrain from Gwendolen Fer, the French had to make do with only three riders in the jumping and came in second place in the final result. The Australian team, which only had three riders and was in the lead after the dressage, had already slipped after the off-road day. Germany not only won the team competition, it also dominated the individual competition with Michael Jung's double victory, followed by Sandra Auffarth with her successful horse Opgun Louvo .

3rd test: United Kingdom

The British stage of the Nations Cup 2016, the Houghton International Horse Trials , took place from May 26th to 29th, 2016 . The venue was the country estate of Houghton Hall in the county of Norfolk .

Seven teams started in the Nations Cup, six of which brought a full team result to the finish. The United States of America started with only three riders, and because Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp went out on the day off, they received 1000 points in the team result. As in the previous year, Germany won. In the individual standings, the British rider Nicola Wilson, who is experienced in championships, won third place with her second horse.

4th test: Poland

At the venue of the 2017 European Eventing Championships , the Lower Silesian town of Strzegom , the Polish Eventing Nations Cup was also held in 2016. The Strzegom Horse Trials were held here from June 23rd to 26th, 2016 . In addition to the CICO 3 * national prize, six other versatility tests were offered at the same time, from the 1 * versatility to the CCI 3 *.

Once again, the Strzegom cross-country course was very selective: eight teams started, of which only one out of four riders reached the finish in two teams. The victory went to Great Britain with a margin of 13.3 minus points. Italy came on the next rank, all other teams followed at a considerable distance. One week after the great Luhmühlen eventing (CCI 4 * and CIC 3 *, with German championship), Germany was only represented by three riders and came in fourth. Michael Jung, who did not start in Luhmühlen, came in second and fourth in the individual standings, victory went to Ludwig Svennerstål, 0.10 minus points.

5th exam: United States of America

The first special event of the Nations Cup for eventing riders outside of Europe took place from July 8-10, 2016 in the small town of The Plains in Virginia , 75 km from Washington DC. The Great Meadow International Nations Cup was advertised as a CICO 3 * and also served as an Olympic preparation tournament for the US team.

In The Plains, the starting field mainly consisted of riders from the host nation, but Great Britain and Canada also started teams. With a lead of almost 40 minus points, victory clearly went to the United States.

6. Examination: Germany

The German Nations Cup tournaments in five disciplines, including versatility, took place from July 8th to 17th, 2016 in Aachen . The eventing riders first competed in the dressage and jumping competitions at the CHIO Aachen on Friday, July 15, and the final cross-country test on the following day.

Nine teams started in Aachen. The Australian team, half made up of riders residing in Australia and half in Europe, already took the lead with their dressage result and did not let them take it until the end of the test. In the following places, however, a close decision appeared after the jumping: The teams from New Zealand, Great Britain and Germany were only 0.70 minus points behind each other in places two to four. However, New Zealand and Great Britain each had to accept the elimination of a rider and additional high negative scores for another rider, so that they fell back to fourth and fifth place in the end result. Instead, Ireland fought its way up place by place: With average dressage results, they were initially only eighth. Although there were only three participants at the start for Ireland and thus no cancellation result was available, they remained completely error-free in the jumping and only received 22.8 minus points in the area, so that they came third in the final classification. With even better performances on the cross-country course, the German team was able to compensate for a mediocre result on the jumping course and came in second in the final result.

In the individual standings on the day off, Ingrid Klimke and her horse Hale Bob were in the lead for a long time , and with her team horse Escada she also took second place. The Australian Shane Rose took over the lead from her. Michael Jung and Takinou were the last couple to go into the area. Both were in second place after dressage and jumping (only Julia Krajewski was even better placed with Samourai du Thot , but withdrew her start in front of the area). In order to keep the lead, Jung was allowed to allow himself a maximum of 5.20 minus points for exceeding the time - which he managed exactly.

7th test: Italy

After only a few riders competed in the Montelibretti Nations Cup in previous years and the team competition was completely canceled in 2015, the Italian Nations Cup was re-awarded. In 2016 it was held in Vidigulfo (district of Vairano), in the immediate vicinity of the Autodromo di Vairano automobile race track. The CICO 3 * tournament took place from September 16 to 18, 2016.

While the German riders dominated the CCI 3 *, which was held in parallel (four riders from places one to five came from Germany), there was a head-to-head decision between France and Germany in the team classification of the CICO 3 *. While France was only just ahead of Switzerland and Germany after the dressage, the German team fell back slightly in the field. Switzerland slipped to the bottom of the ranking when Jennifer Eicher gave up. In jumping, Germany was able to work its way back to France with only four additional minus points, but it remained with the French leadership until the end. In the individual classification of the CICO 3 *, however, Andreas Ostholt won with Pennsylvania by over two minus points.

8th test: Belgium

For the third year in a row, the Internationaal Eventing Waregem in Waregem was Belgium's Nations Cup. The tournament was held one week after Vairano, from September 22nd to 25th, 2016.

After the dressage, the German team was ahead of Sweden. Andreas Dibowski withdrew his horse from the second partial test, jumping, so that his three 23-year-old teammates no longer had any discarded results. In jumping, a lot of riders got four or more minus points, so that the ranking was mixed up - the German riders stayed at the top. In the area a few team riders had refusals to accept (still fumble the Equipen of Belgium and Sweden), but many got added double-digit minus points for exceeding the time limit. With only 16 minus points on the interim result on top of that, Germany achieved the best result in the field and thus secured victory in this Nations Cup. Great Britain, which was still in fifth place after dressage, came in second in the final ranking.

There was also a start-to-finish victory for a German team pair in the individual standings : Stephanie Böhe and Holstein gelding Haytom got 42.70 minus points in dressage, and only 4.40 minus points in the entire test. Böhe was one of only two riders who got a result of less than 50 minus points.

9th test: Netherlands

As one of the last tournaments of the season in Europe, Military Boekelo has always been the last stage of the Nations Cup since the first season. The Netherlands Nations Cup tournament, a CCIO 3 *, was held in Boekelo from October 6th to 9th, 2016.

Only this one test was held in Boekelo on this tournament weekend, but it had the largest field of all Nations Cups this season: 94 horses and their riders were at the start, twelve nations competed in the team classification. After the dressage, Australia was clearly in the lead with more than seven minus points, Germany followed in second place. In the area, nine teams had to forego at least one of their team riders through retirement or abandonment. Two riders of the Australian team were eliminated in the terrain, so that the team fell back to ninth place after the terrain. For Germany, too, after Anna Siemer's fall, the result was clear , so that the minus points for two refusals by Ben Leuwer and Port Royal were fully included in the result and the team thus dropped out of the top 3 positions. After rather average dressage results, good results in cross-country and jumping brought the hosts forward, the Netherlands came third in the final result. The victory was secured by a large margin, Great Britain, whose riders, after good dressage, got through the terrain and jumping with almost no mistakes and were even able to compensate for the terrain after Flora Harris fell.

In the individual evaluation, Stephanie Böhe achieved a particular success: The Waregem winner took her first 3 * long-term test here with Haytom . With a result of 43.90 minus points, she was not two minus points behind the leader, Isabella Innes Ker, in seventh place in dressage. In the field, Böhe made no mistakes and moved up to the top spot. In jumping, she again made no mistakes with her 14-year-old gelding and won the test and prize money of 12,500 euros. Second place went to Andreas Dibowski, on whose riding facility Stephanie Böhe has been working independently for a year.
