FIH Hockey World League / 2012-2013
The first edition of the Hockey World League began in August 2012 and ended in January 2014. A total of 16 tournaments were held in four rounds for men and 13 for women. The Netherlands won the competition for both men and women.
format
The competition had a cycle of two years and consisted of four rounds. In the rounds, different numbers of tournaments were played at different locations.
- Round 1 was played in local tournaments. In order to keep the travel costs for smaller countries low, the number of tournaments, participants and qualifiers for the next round varied.
- Round 2 consisted of four tournaments with six participants each who played in a group. The nations in positions 9 to 16 in the world rankings were directly qualified for this round.
- Round 3 - The nations in positions 1 to 8 in the world rankings only entered the competition here. Two tournaments (semifinals) with eight participants each were played. Initially, the game was played in two groups, followed by placement games. These two tournaments also served to qualify for the joint hockey world championships in 2014 in The Hague for women and men .
- Round 4 - At the end of the competition, the top eight nations played a tournament in the same mode as the semi-finals in Round 3.
