The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden ( OTH-AW ) is one of the younger universities of applied sciences in Germany. It is divided into the home locations Amberg ( location coordinates: 49 ° 26 ′ 39.8 ″  N , 11 ° 50 ′ 50.6 ″  E ) and Weiden ( location ) as well as the cooperation location Regensburg . The name "Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule" is based on an existing cooperation agreement with the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg .

history

In 1991 the Bavarian Cabinet decided to set up new technical college locations in Bavaria, including that of the Amberg-Weiden technical college. On May 1, 1994, the Amberg-Weiden University of Applied Sciences was actually founded, with August Behr from the then Munich University of Applied Sciences as the founding president . In March 2008, the name was changed to “University of Applied Sciences - Amberg-Weiden University of Applied Sciences”. It had the abbreviation “HAW”, which means “University of Applied Sciences” and “University of Amberg-Weiden”. In 2013, the University of Applied Sciences was given the name Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden ; the corresponding amendment to the constitution was drawn up in November 2013.

1995 saw the start of studies with the courses in business administration in Weiden and electrical engineering in Amberg. In 1997 industrial engineering followed in Weiden and mechanical engineering and environmental technology in Amberg, in 1999 patent engineering and software system technology, which was renamed Applied Computer Science in the 2006 winter semester, in Amberg. In 2003/2004, the Media Production and Media Technology course in Amberg and the Management and European Languages ​​course, now renamed International Technology Management, in Weiden. The courses in renewable energies , trade and service management, plastics technology and medical technology followed . Building on a first degree, the following master’s degree courses are offered: IT and automation, environmental technology, innovation-focused mechanical engineering, applied research in engineering sciences, media technology and media production, medical technology and intercultural corporate and technology management, accompanied by cooperative master’s degree programs at other universities. There are currently 3,000 students enrolled in 20 courses, supervised by 83 professors.

Business Administration (Bachelor)

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with future-oriented, scientifically sound knowledge of the management and administration of companies and to convey their application in everyday practice. This aim is also served by the practical phase integrated into the course, through which the place of learning is temporarily relocated from the university to the companies and other institutions of professional practice. The students should be enabled to analyze processes and problems in business practice, to work out practical problem solutions and also to observe international references ("business problem-solving skills"). For this purpose, the necessary tools are imparted on a professional, methodical and personal social level. In addition, the students should be instructed to reflect on the values ​​and norms of today's economic systems. After completing their studies, the students should be able to take on technical and managerial tasks in companies and administration, to work in an entrepreneurial or freelance manner and to apply new scientific findings in practice in a beneficial way. By specifying specializations, a moderate specialization takes place, which takes into account the interdisciplinary nature of this subject.

Trade and Service Management (Bachelor)

The course in trade and service management conveys the necessary basic business knowledge as well as optional specializations in the areas of trade management, finance and insurance markets and industrial service management. This appeals to students who want to orient themselves early on to the specific requirements of trade, financial markets or industrial service functions. It is optionally possible to complete the course full-time or part-time.

Electrical engineering and information technology (Bachelor)

The electrical engineering and information technology degree course aims to provide a practical education based on scientific knowledge and methods that enables people to work independently as an engineer in electrical engineering and information technology.

Industry 4.0 Computer Science (Bachelor)

The Bachelor's degree in Industry 4.0 Informatics is located at the interface between computer science and engineering . It prepares students for the requirements of Industry 4.0, which are characterized by the increasing dovetailing of industrial production with modern information and communication technology. The focus is u. a. on big data , data analytics , cyber-physical systems and industrial ethernet .

IT and Automation (Master)

The master's degree in Industrial Information Technology with a focus on "IT for Automation" and "IT for Production Processes" is aimed at graduates with a first diploma or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and information technology, computer engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, and automation technology , Industrial engineering or business informatics. The "Master of Engineering" degree opens up professional fields in the areas of automation, automotive and IT use in development, production and logistics.

Innovation-focused mechanical engineering (Master)

The basic structure of the “Innovation-Focused Mechanical Engineering” master’s course is interdisciplinary and is intended to do justice to the complex interdisciplinary problems that will arise in the future in the company's business practice. The master’s course conveys its content focus in the technical area as well as with legal and business administration content in modern forms of teaching such as project work in order to promote cross-sectional thinking and the interface skills of the students. This is supported by lectures in the field of social skills , "moderation techniques" and close cooperation with industry. The master’s course offers graduates of a technical bachelor’s or diploma course the opportunity to qualify as young executives in the field of research and development, product management or technical sales, based on a sound technical education.

Environmental Technology (Master)

The master's degree in "Environmental Technology" offers in-depth environmental technology qualifications for above-average bachelor and diploma graduates in technical and natural science courses. Target groups are bachelor's / diploma graduates in the fields of process engineering, mechanical engineering, supply engineering, civil engineering, production engineering, technical physics, industrial engineering, patent engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering and, with restrictions, students of natural sciences who, following their diploma or their Bachelor are looking for a deeper scientific insight into the engineering sciences and increased application relevance (biology, chemistry, physics). The master’s course is consecutive and more application-oriented.

Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor)

The Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering is divided into modules that are grouped into module groups according to their content. Further components of the course are a basic internship and a practical semester. The course concludes with a Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.). Afterwards there is the possibility at the OTH Amberg - Weiden to take the master's course "Innovation Focused Engineering and Management (IFEM)".

Patent Engineering (Bachelor)

The course conveys technical core competencies, accompanied by intensive legal and business knowledge in the patent system. The course content is divided into the module groups natural science / technology, law, business administration and integration / specialization. The demand from industrial patent departments and patent law firms has increased steadily. The proportion of female students is around 30%. The course is offered unique in Germany only in Amberg.

Renewable Energies (Bachelor)

In addition to purely technical and ecological aspects, ethical and economic implications of the technologies used are also taught. As part of the course, therefore, in addition to the classic energy conversion processes, CO 2 -neutral technologies such as B. the use of solar, wind and bioenergy is dealt with intensively. A special focus is placed on the methods of the rational use of energy.

Plastics Technology (Bachelor)

The 7-semester bachelor's degree is divided into three study sections and includes a practical semester. In addition to scientific and technical basics such as mathematics, physics and technical mechanics, in-depth knowledge such as construction, automation technology and fluid mechanics is imparted. Plastics-technical content in the second and especially in the third section of the course includes the structure and properties of plastics and their processing. Particular attention is paid to key technologies such as composite materials. In addition to the technical subjects, “social skills” such as teamwork are taught. Overall, emphasis is placed on imparting mechanical engineering and plastics engineering skills that are urgently needed in the plastics processing industry, while chemical content is only conveyed where it is important for understanding plastics. Graduates can use their knowledge e.g. B. in the master’s course “Innovation Focused Engineering and Management” at the University of Amberg. The plastics technology course, which the OTH Amberg - Weiden has been offering since the 2009/2010 winter semester, takes account of the fact that a large number of medium-sized plastics processing companies are based in the Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia.

Environmental Technology (Bachelor)

Environmental engineering engineers deal with the development and use of technical systems for preventive or follow-up protection of the natural environment. They develop technical methods and procedures with which future environmental damage can be avoided from the outset through integrated technologies and the resulting pollution can be reduced through follow-up measures.

Medical technology (Bachelor)

The medical technology course provides the necessary specialist and methodological skills for the development, testing, manufacturing and application of medical components, devices and systems. The students acquire the necessary medical specialist knowledge in direct connection with practical knowledge from the natural and engineering sciences. In the development and manufacture of medical technology products, the topic of approval procedures and quality management are particularly taken into account. With the skills imparted in the course, corresponding tasks can be taken on in national and international medical technology companies after graduation. The course qualifies both in professional terms for activities in the field of medical technology as well as for advanced master’s courses.

Industrial Engineering (Bachelor)

The aim of training to become an industrial engineer is to integrate technical and business skills with an emphasis on practical relevance. The course imparts knowledge and skills in economic, engineering and natural science disciplines as well as interdisciplinary skills. The industrial engineer is usually employed at the interfaces between technical and economic areas such as work preparation , controlling , data processing , ergonomics , finance , logistics , marketing , organization , project management , quality management , technical purchasing , management consulting and sales .

The course lasts seven semesters and consists of three study sections and a pre-study internship. In the first section, the basic course, engineering and business basics are laid. The two following sections, which also include a practical semester in a company, impart sound skills in engineering, economics and overarching, integrative disciplines as well as key qualifications with methodological and social skills.

International Technology Management (Bachelor)

The International Technology Management degree program focuses on imparting language skills in at least one Central Eastern European language or Chinese, in English (business) and other language-related electives. The foreign language training is not limited to classic translation and interpreting, but is complemented by modern, cross-sectional courses with content from engineering and business administration as well as intercultural competence up to and including regional economics in Central and Eastern Europe. With a view to the professional requirements, especially in the course of the EU expansion to include Central Eastern European countries, the course is designed to be practice-oriented. The original, now outdated, name of the degree was Management and European Languages. The standard period of study is seven semesters and is divided into three study sections with six theoretical study semesters and one practical semester.

Intercultural corporate and technology management (Master)

The master’s program in Intercultural Business and Technology Management teaches management skills in an intercultural and technology-oriented environment, building on a first degree in engineering or economics. The course should enable students to understand technological developments and their significance, business and economic interrelationships as well as the relevance of cultural factors in the international dimension, to recognize corresponding interrelationships and to implement this knowledge in business practice.

Media Informatics (Bachelor)

The bachelor's degree in media informatics is interdisciplinary: at the interface between technology, society and digital media , the students deal with solutions for the digital world of life and work. In addition to classic core IT topics, the study program also includes content on digital media, the development of user-friendly interactive software systems, web engineering and the development of mobile applications.

Media production and media technology (Bachelor)

The OTH Amberg-Weiden opened the course media production and media technology in the winter semester 2003/2004. The aim of the course is to convey a broadly applicable usage and application competence in the creation and use of media products by combining technical, information technology and design skills. Graduates of the degree program have in-depth knowledge in the fields of technology and production of audiovisual and computer-aided media as well as content development and media design.

In a scope of seven semesters, a combination of technical knowledge with media design skills for the use of modern multimedia products and services is conveyed against this background. Cooperation with the media industry makes an additional contribution to the attractiveness of the course. It addresses those prospective students who, in addition to (media) technical knowledge, also want to integrate creative and journalistic content into their training profile.

Media technology and media production (master)

Since the summer semester of 2008, the OTH Amberg-Weiden has been offering a master’s degree in media technology and media production in cooperation with the TH Deggendorf - based on an initial, completed degree in media technology. The time schedule is three semesters, with the degree "Master of Engineering". The university is a member of MedienCampus Bayern , the umbrella organization for media education and training in Bavaria.

"OTH Professional" stands within the scope of the offer of OTH Amberg-Weiden for the combination of work and education or further education at university level.

School leavers, trained specialists and academics are given the opportunity to pursue a dual course of study in one of the OTH Amberg-Weiden courses, individual further training measures or a complete part-time course with a state qualification.

OTH Professional also offers study preparation courses that are specially tailored to the needs of professionally qualified prospective students. With these preparatory courses, prospective students without a higher education entrance qualification, ie without a classic high school diploma, can prepare for their studies in parallel to their job and in a targeted manner in the period before the start of their studies. The OTH Amberg-Weiden is the only Bavarian university that has been offering this kind of study preparation for over 10 years.
