The University of Kaiserslautern (HSKL or HS KL for short, formerly Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences ) with the three study locations Kaiserslautern , Pirmasens and Zweibrücken is a German university of applied sciences . With around 6,319 students (2,045 women), 482.5 employees (180 women and 148 professors), it is one of the largest universities in Rhineland-Palatinate and has a 160-year tradition in engineering education.

timeline

The earliest forerunner of today's university is the chair for practical mechanics at the district trade school, which was founded in 1844. After further stations at the Höhere Technische Staatslehranstalt (1922) and the State Engineering School Kaiserslautern (founded in 1942, closed in 1943), it was renamed the Staatl. Engineering school for mechanical engineering newly founded. In 1969 this was merged with the Palatinate Engineering School for Construction to form the State Engineering School for Construction and Mechanical Engineering . In 1971 this was then incorporated into the newly founded Rhineland-Palatinate University of Applied Sciences . In the following year, the textile technology department was expanded with the takeover of the former State Engineering School for Textile Technology Lambrecht , and the Werkkunstschule of the Palatinate district association was incorporated as the interior architecture and graphics / design department.

In 1989 the textile technology, shoe and leather technology and chemical technology departments were relocated from Kaiserslautern to Pirmasens. As a conversion project in which former military facilities were used for civil purposes, the Zweibrücken study location was created in 1994 with the departments of business administration , IT and microsystems technology .

When the units of the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Applied Sciences became independent, the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences was established in 1996 with the three study locations Kaiserslautern, Pirmasens and Zweibrücken.

In September 2014, the University of Applied Sciences was renamed the University of Kaiserslautern . The Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences still has the status of a university of applied sciences.

Since January 2015, the university has been using a new logo that takes up the geographic location of the university with the outline of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and is intended to underline the positioning approach: historically grown, regionally rooted and well networked. The color scheme of the logo was developed from the colors of the region and transferred to the departments of the university. The logo is intended to symbolize the connection between the three study locations and to underline the connection between the university and the region. They also want to show that the university is regional and cosmopolitan.

Study locations

University in Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern is home to the “Applied Engineering Sciences” (AING) and “Building and Designing” (BG) departments with around 2,700 students who are spread over the two locations Morlauterer Strasse and Schoenstrasse. In future, both locations are to be merged on the site of the old worsted spinning mill . On June 13, 2017, the new study location Kaiserslautern, in the immediate vicinity of the Kaiserslautern Garden Show , was inaugurated.

Pirmasens as a place of study

Cafeteria in the inner courtyard of the HS Pirmasens

The “Applied Logistics and Polymer Sciences ” (ALP) department with around 700 students is based at the Pirmasens study site . The smallest place to study at the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences was first on Lemberger Straße in 1989 before it was later moved to the former US school on Husterhöhe , a disbanded American army base.

Zweibrücken study location

Building H of the Zweibrücken study site

The Zweibrücken study location was founded in 1994 as a " campus university " and is therefore the youngest location of the university. Nevertheless, like the Kaiserslautern location, this location has around 2,700 students. On the former US military site of the Zweibrücker Kreuzberg, the third mainstay of the university was located partly in the old rooms of an American school, which were completely renovated, and in numerous new buildings. The Zweibrücken location was designed according to the American model, so that the student residences are in close proximity to the study location itself. One of them is run by the Studierendenwerk Kaiserslautern.

In Zweibrücken the departments “ Business Administration ” and “ Computer Science / Microsystems Technology ” (BW & I / MST) are housed with around 2600 students. There is an AStA ( General Student Committee ) at the Zweibrücken location . The AStA has the following departments: chairmanship, culture, social affairs, finance, sport, public, events, mobility, kiosk, sponsoring & organization, administration and international affairs. The Public Section also has a sub-division called CampusTV, which documents the events and life on campus in the form of videos and publishes them on YouTube .

The offers managed by the Sports Department include a sports room directly on campus and a selection of different activities such as yoga , volleyball , parkour and Freeletics .

Since 2019 - in cooperation with the university - the rooms of the former contrast stage have been reopened, these rooms are now called Campino and are the venue for weekly events of the AStA and the student councils.

The Zweibrücken study location has the specialist committees for study and teaching (FSL) in the IT and ALS / MNT departments. Students, professors and assistants are represented on each committee. Here the needs and suggestions of the students should be implemented, and attention should be paid to compliance with the relevant guidelines. Organizational matters are also planned and implemented in the individual committees according to their purpose.

The Zweibrücken location has its own crèche, which can be used by children of studying parents. In addition, there is the so-called parent-child study (ElKaz) on campus, which can be used by professors, employees and students in order to offer an attractive opportunity to work with their children at the university.

A public observatory has been located on the Zweibrücken campus since 2002 . This has caused a sensation since 2019 because Hubert Zitt and his helpers repainted it, which makes it resemble the world-famous R2D2 robot from the Star Wars saga . She became known worldwide when one of the leading characters in the series Mark Hammill shared the observatory on Twitter .

The location is also known for the annual StarTrek lecture by Hubert Zitt, which attracts hundreds of science fiction fans at the end of the year.

University library

The university library of the University of Kaiserslautern is a central service facility of the university and is open to the public for a wide range of users (members of the HS-KL and other universities as well as private individuals). It has three branch libraries - one at each of the three university locations. The branch libraries are connected to one another via an internal delivery service. Like many university libraries, this one also offers access to digital libraries for journals, magazines and other scientific publications. B. IEEE Xplore , or Wiley .

Contributions

All students pay a student union fee and the AStA fee of € 103 per semester . In contrast to the students at the Kaiserslautern and Pirmasens locations, there are no costs for a semester ticket for students at the Zweibrücken location , as they do not receive one. For many years, however, there has been talk of whether Zweibrücken should also receive a semester ticket. An agreement has not yet been reached.
