The Faulkogel is 2654  m above sea level. A. high mountain of the Radstädter Tauern , on the border between the districts of St. Johann (Pongau) and Tamsweg (Lungau) in the province of Salzburg .

Location and landscape

The Faulkogel lies between Flachauer Tal , Kleinarltal and Zederhaustal , west of the slightly higher Mosermandl  ( 2680  m above sea level ) and the Tauern tunnel of the Tauern motorway  (A10). It belongs to the main Alpine ridge , where the ridge branches off to the north between Kleinarl and Flachau, which leads over the Kraxenkogel  ( 2436  m above sea level ) and the Wagrainer Höhe to the Hochgründeck of the Fritztal mountains .

The mountain itself has three peaks, the highest being the north summit.

To the southwest below lies the Windischscharte  ( 2304  m above sea level ), which delimits the Mosermandl massif, here the Windischkopf  ( 2609  m above sea level ) rises as a secondary peak. To the southwest, after the Hoferscharte  ( 2356  m above sea level ) follows the Rothorn  ( 2522  m above sea level ). Neukarscharte  ( 2257  m above sea level ) and Schoberscharte  ( 2140  m above sea level ) lead north to the Schoberkogel  ( 2229  m above sea level ).

The summit is a border between the Riedingtal nature park and the Lungau – Nockberge biosphere reserve .

Hydrology

Faulkogel and Zaunersee

South springs from the Zaunerkar in Zaunersee the fence Erbach to Riedingbach that over the Zederhausbach to Mur approaching. The Hofkar in the west drains over the waterfall at the Unterhofalm to the Kleinarlerache (Kleinarlbach am Oberlauf), which flows into the Salzach as Wagrainer Ache . To the north-east lies another cirque landscape , the Neukar , in which the Neukarsee lies. This area drains to the Marbach , the tributary of the Pleißlingbach below the Tauernalm. That goes to the Enns , which rises on the Kraxenkogel. This makes the mountain the triple point of three fundamental river basin units in Austria , Danube to Jochenstein  (DBJ), to which the Inn with Salzach belongs, Danube below Jochenstein  (DUJ) with the Enns, and Mur - in itself a tributary of the Drau , but which is in Austria is calculated independently. This point is the more southern summit (approx.  2640  m   ). The Drau – Inn watershed leads west to the Dreiherrenspitze , the border triangle between Salzburg, East Tyrol and South Tyrol, with the Inn – Drau – Mur triple point at Weinschnabel on the Carinthian border to the south. The Drau – Enns watershed runs eastwards over the Gippel on the Styrian-Lower Austrian border to the Gippelmauer , where the triple point DUJ – MUR – LRR (Leitha, Raab and Rabnitz) is located. And the Jochenstein as a brand is right north on the Upper Austrian-Bavarian border in the Danube.

geology

Like the surrounding limestone mountains, the Faulkogel is formed from formations that actually fall into the Northern Limestone Alps , a characteristic of the Radstätter Tauern, which are part of the Central Eastern Alps and do not belong to the central crystalline of the Alps (problem of the lower / upper eastern Alpine delimitation). The rocks of the summit are main dolomites and date to the north of the Triassic (230–210 million years ago ). The flanks of the mountain are slightly older marbles and slates of Karn , Ladin and Anise . On the southern flank there is also Wetterstein dolomite, which builds up the main mass of the Radstätter Tauern from the Mosermandl massif.

In the Neukar lies a mighty moraine that is reminiscent of the Faulkogel glacier, which disappeared in prehistoric times.

history

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, when the Alpine peaks were first measured successively, the Faulkogel was considered the highest peak in the area at over 8,000 feet for a long time. In fact, in addition to the Mosermandl, the Weißeck to the south ( 2711  m above sea level ) and the Hochfeind ( 2687  m above sea level ) to the east of the former are higher.

Tours

The Faulkogel can be climbed from the Riedingtal , where it is beautifully visible, via the Franz-Fischer-Hütte , from the Tauernalm at the Tauerntunnel north portal via the Mosermandl ascent, or from the Schüttbachalm there a little further down the valley via the Ursprungalm and the Neukarsee, respectively into the Windischscharte. From Flachau it is also possible to climb via the Ursprungalm and Neukarscharte. Both climbs have climbing spots. The crossing to the Rothorn is high alpine.
