Fear of the Dark ( English for: " Fear of the Dark ") is the ninth studio album by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden . In 1994 it was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance .

background

It was the last album with singer Bruce Dickinson until his return in 1999. Bruce Dickinson wanted to take care of his solo career. The following two studio albums on Fear of the Dark were recorded with Blaze Bayley .

A special feature of the cover artwork was that for the first time in Iron Maiden's career, Derek Riggs was not responsible for the design. The picture ultimately used is from Melvyn Grant.

The album was received mixed by fans and critics and rated as below average, especially compared to previous albums by the band, with Bruce Dickinsons' vocal performance also being criticized as relatively poor.

This album is also the last album that was produced by Martin Birch . He retired shortly afterwards.

The album reached the top of the album charts in the UK.

Song information

  • Be Quick or Be Dead is about political scandals, the hypocrisy of politicians and business leaders and their greed for money. The title is very atypical for Maiden, it's faster and Dickinson's vocals sound more aggressive. A music video was also made for the song.
  • From Here to Eternity continues the story of Charlotte the Harlot (from the debut album ), 22 Acacia Avenue (from the album The Number of the Beast ) and Hooks in You (from the previous album ). The song is about a motorcycle trip that the prostitute Charlotte makes with the devil and is full of sexual innuendos. As of this writing, it will be the last song about Charlotte.
  • Afraid to Shoot Strangers is about the Second Gulf War . It's about soldiers preparing for battle and their thoughts on the killing.
  • Fear is the Key is about the immune deficiency disease AIDS . The song was influenced by the death of Freddie Mercury .
  • Childhood's End is about suffering and pain in the world.
  • The Fugitive is based on the series Auf der Flucht .
  • Weekend Warrior is about hooligans .
  • Fear of the Dark is about the fear of the dark. Over time it developed into a live classic and is an integral part of the Iron Maiden sets. From Fear of the Dark are countless cover and live versions, among others, Cradle of Filth , Children of Bodom , Van Canto , Fightstar , Graveworm , Future Idiots , Sturm und Drang , Chuck Billy , Pentagram , Doro Pesch and The Meteors .
