history

The Heppenheim Festival was founded by the actor and director Hans Richter and his wife Ingeborg Bieber (1921–2009). On August 9, 1974, the opening took place with the play Jedermann by Hugo von Hofmannsthal in front of the Catholic parish church of St. Peter (also known as the Bergstrasse cathedral ).

The actual venue for the festival, however, is the Theater im Hof in the historic Kurmainzer Amtshof . It is modeled on the Shakespeare theater. There is space for around 580 spectators at tables for wine and pretzels. Since it was founded, the festival has had well over 1,000,000 visitors.

Since 1992 the festival has been under the direction of Thomas Richter († 2017), son of Hans Richter. From 2012 to 2018 his wife Sabine Richter took on the leading role. Stephan Brömme has been the managing director of Festspiele Heppenheim GmbH since 2018 . Due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the operating company had to file for preliminary bankruptcy in May 2020 .
