Neusüss was one of the main representatives of experimental photography in Germany. He focused on the reflection on the medium of photography itself.

The focus of his work was the photogram, the limits of which he repeatedly explored and redefined and which he condensed into a singular variety. Neusüss did not see himself as a pioneer , but in a long tradition of a technique and a medium that corresponds to his artistic form of expression. Christian Schad , Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy have already dealt with photograms.

In the 1960s, Neusüss developed the nudogram as a cameraless photographer , a further development of the photogram that captures the silhouettes of mostly female photo models on photo paper. Since 1964 he also experimented with chemical painting on photograms. Neusüss' goal was to bring the photogram out of the laboratory and out of the studio to the objects. As a flaneur , Neusüss did not have the camera with him to photograph motifs, but a folder with photo paper, which he exposed using daylight and thus worked out his motifs, such as plants or windows , as in the photo series Traumbilder . For Neusüss, the photographic medium was not an impression, but a contact image. According to its interpretation, the object had touched the picture in the original.

Beyond a documentary aspect, Neusüss did not take a picture of the object, but of the object. Neusüss' oeuvre showed more than an image of reality, it was rather characterized by a surreal impression that was derived from real objects and motifs .

His 1972 portrait series VIPs at documenta 5 showed life-size photograms. These were portraits of visitors and artists. He lined up in photo campaigns of this time, such as his works Flugtraum from 1976 and Körper Auflösungen from 1977. Neusüss camera photography and conceptual photo works, like his work Schaufenster from 1971 to 1978, were made while traveling through Europe . He briefly caught the world of goods in passing. These photograms are characterized by a reminiscence of the surrealist photography of the 1920s.

In the 1980s, Neusüss also experimented with colored photograms and collages . In particular through his teaching activities and through his Kassel Forum, he shaped several generations of photographers. He also published numerous textbooks and collected photograms.
