The settlement is about 360  m above sea level. A. northeast above the town of Perg on the southern edge of the Austrian granite and gneiss highlands .

From a geological and geomorphological point of view as well as aspects of the use of space, Forndorf belongs to two of the 41 spatial units of the state of Upper Austria . A small part of the village belongs to the Aist-Naarn-Kuppenland spatial unit while the other part belongs to the southern Mühlviertler peripheral areas .

The municipality border between Perg and Windhaag runs directly on the local road, so that the place falls into two municipalities . In Perg, the village is statistically part of Lehenbrunn and the signs are therefore Forndorf-Lehenbrunn.

The place comprises about 45 buildings, half of them in the two communities.
