Location of Franconia in Rhineland-Palatinate

Franconia is the southernmost and in terms of population the smallest district of Sinzig in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located away from the city on the edge of the Eifel in the headwaters of the Frankenbach , above the moated Ahrenthal castle . The Marienhof residential area belongs to Franconia .

history

middle Ages

The village of Franconia is probably a Franconian settlement from the Merovingian era . The first mention of the place francs with its church took place on March 31, 1131, when Pope Innocent II. The Bonner Cassius pen possession of the Church in Franconia confirmed: Frankin, ecclesiam cum decimis - "Franks church with the tithe." A total of 30 churches are listed in this document.

In 1147 the ownership of an inheritance went to Maria Laach, and in 1285 to the Steinfeld monastery. In 1295, the German King Adolf von Nassau pledged half of the Sinzig, which formally belonged to the imperial estate, to which Franconia also belonged, to the Count of Jülich. The following King Albrecht again transferred this half to the Archbishop of Cologne , Wigbold . In 1348 King Charles IV confirmed the seizure of half of Sinzig and Franconia to Margrave Wilhelm von Jülich; In this context, Franconia went to the knight Heinrich von Sinzig (1336-1361) and in 1374 to Rolmann von Ahrenthal. In 1376 the rule of Duke Wilhelm von Jülich was transferred to the Margrave Count Wilhelm von Berg .

Early modern age

In 1428, Archbishop Otto of Trier enfeoffed the Salentin von Ahrenthal, a descendant of the Rollmanns, with large parts of the Franconian rule on the basis of the partition agreement of 1388. For four generations the Wiltberg family remained the feudal lords of the other part of Ahrenthal and Franconia.

The last Wiltberg, Adolph von Wiltberg (* 1553) died childless on July 1, 1621. The Hillesheim family came to rule over Ahrenthal and Franconia via a branch line. On January 28, 1641, Wilhelm von Hillesheim was enfeoffed by Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm von Jülich with the house of Ahrenthal and the associated village of Franconia. Until the end of the 18th century, the village of Franconia belonged to the Ahrenthal rule .

After 1794 and the occupation of Germany on the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops, the village of Franconia was added to Mairie Sinzig in the canton of Remagen . Reliable municipal registers were created for the first time. Thus, for 1799 213 inhabitants, for 1809 312 inhabitants. With 9 horses and 294 horned cattle, a relatively large livestock was counted.

Prussian and modern times

By 1840 the population grew to 476 residents who lived in 78 houses. The population was purely Catholic. During the Prussian period, Franconia became an independent municipality and from 1816 belonged to the Niederbreisig mayor , which belonged to the Mayen district and from 1818 to the Ahrweiler district . What is striking, however, is the population decline that characterized the second half of the 19th century and is associated with industrialization and emigration to America. In 1895 the population had dropped to 324 people.

At that time, Franconia was important for its fruit growing. Around 1800 8000 apple and pear trees are counted in the district. In 1913 there were still 4,327 fruit trees planted.

On March 15, 1925, the population fell to just 273 citizens. Compared to other areas of the country, it was possible to identify a “serious productivity deficit”, especially in the field of arable farming. Politically, the National Socialist Party received a clear rebuff in all subsequent elections. By compulsory membership, however, a general synchronization and National Socialist leveling began.

The total number of inhabitants after the Second World War under French occupation (1946) was 303 people. On June 7, 1969, the previously independent community with 373 inhabitants was incorporated into the city of Sinzig.
