The Konstablerwache in Frankfurt am Main , also known colloquially as "Konsti", is a square in the center of the city and the eastern end of Frankfurt's pedestrian zone (Opernplatz-Hauptwache-Konstablerwache). It is to the east of the Hauptwache ; both squares are connected by the city's central shopping street - the Zeil  . There is also a main traffic junction for the RMV , both above and below ground, and the main crossing point for the night bus routes.

On today's Konstablerwache square, on the corner of Fahrgasse, there has been an armory of the Frankfurt City Guard since 1544 , which for a long time represented the eastern end of the Zeil. In 1822 the military building, which had meanwhile been converted into a guard station, was abandoned and converted into a police station. The name Konstablerwache comes from the fact that it was the guard of the Frankfurt Constable . In 1833 it was attacked and looted by rebellious students in the Frankfurt Wachensturm .

In the early days , the guard had become too small for the growing city. The new police headquarters on Hohenzollernplatz (today Platz der Republik ) replaced Konstablerwache and Hauptwache . In contrast to the Hauptwache, the Konstablerwache was demolished in 1886 and replaced by commercial buildings. Today the beehive house stands here .

Until 1881, today's square was a narrow street crossing. The broad Zeil, which ends here, continued to the southeast towards Allerheiligentor as Allerheiligenstraße. The north-south connection of the old town with Fahrgasse and Große Friedberger Straße ran across it , leading from the Old Bridge to Friedberger Tor . In the same year, a street breakthrough was completed, the Neue Zeil , a wide shopping street that led from Konstablerwache in an easterly direction to Friedberger Anlage. A square was created between Neuer Zeil and Allerheiligenstrasse, which was much smaller than today's square. Day laborers from East Hesse who were looking for work in Frankfurt gathered on the square. They were called derisively Fulder (after the East Hessian city of Fulda ) in the vernacular , the square itself "Fuldermarkt" or " Dalles ".

With the advent of modern means of transport at the turn of the 20th century , the Konstablerwache became a traffic junction in the city, both for automobile traffic and for trams .

During the Second World War , a large part of the buildings on the Zeil was destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main . The reconstruction was not carried out and a large space was left free. When the newly built Kurt-Schumacher-Straße replaced the Fahrgasse as the most important north-south connection in the eastern city center, the Konstablerwache received its current eastern boundary with this street.

After the redesign to a pedestrian zone , the level of the square was raised by almost 80 centimeters in order to be able to create a two-row planting of plane trees despite the rapid transit station below . This platform is accessible all around by four steps, wheelchair users are given access by two ramps.

Planning

The current condition of the Konstablerwache is generally felt to be unsatisfactory. Both the architecture of the surrounding department stores and the design of the square itself contribute to the fact that the square is one of the ugliest in the city. In particular, the design difficult to understand and functionally harmful pedestal is perceived as a grievance. The steps keep passers-by from entering the square, the inside of the square is hardly used. The Konstablerwache is therefore a frequently mentioned candidate for redesigning public spaces. Current plans provide for the pedestal and thus also the majority of the trees planted there to be removed as part of the redesign of the Zeil.

nightlife

In the vicinity of the Konstablerwache there are facilities of Frankfurt night life, for example the two clubs Sinkkasten in Brönnerstraße and the nightlife right on the square (corner of Kurt-Schumacher-Straße ). There are also two well-known clubs for fans of the “ black scene ”, the Final Destination in Holzgraben and The Cave in Brönnerstraße. North of Konstablerwache, around Alte Gasse , is the city's gay nightlife district. The Konstablerwache bus stop is also the city's central night bus stop .

tram

The former tram junction in the eastern city center only lost its importance after the major line closures in the city center in the 1970s. Initially, the Zeil was used by trams even after it was converted into a pedestrian zone. The line was shut down on the occasion of the construction of the S-Bahn tunnel between Hauptwache and Konstablerwache; a new line through the parallel Stephanstrasse took over part of the traffic. Also in the streets that branch off from the Zeil, Fahrgasse , Schäfergasse and Große Friedberger Straße , trams operated from time to time.

The latter was indeed shut down as early as the 1960s, but in 1986 as the terminus of the through Northrend trains running line taken 12 again. In 1999, after a planning phase of almost ten years, the tram route on Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse was inaugurated. It was now possible to travel from Konstablerwache on line 12, which had previously had its terminus in a side street, without changing to Fechenheim and Schwanheim . The route in Grosse Friedberger Strasse was closed.

Since December 11, 2011, in addition to line 12, the newly installed line 18 has been running via Konstablerwache. It connects Sachsenhausen ( Louisa Bahnhof ) with the new housing estate Frankfurter Bogen belonging to Preungesheim .

Rapid transit node

Plan of the rapid transit junction

Is at the Konstablerwache a large underground crossing station of Frankfurt train network . Two lines of the Frankfurt U-Bahn ( B line , lines U4 and U5, opened in 1974, and C line , lines U6 / U7, since 1986) as well as the inner city line of the S-Bahn (lines S1-S6, S8, S9, since 1983) have train stations here. The station on the B line has three tracks, the C line and the S-Bahn share a four-track station, where you can change between the U- and S-Bahn on the same platform .
