Franklin is a town ( city ) in Johnson County in the US state of Indiana . In 2010 Franklin, which is also the county seat of Johnson County, had 23,712 residents. The city is named after Benjamin Franklin , one of the founding fathers of the United States.
geography
Franklin is centrally located in Indiana. The city is about 20 miles south of Indianapolis . According to the United States Census Bureau, the total area is 29.2 km² of land.
history
In 1823 the first settlers from Kentucky settled. A year later the courthouse, today's district court, was built. Founded in 1834, Franklin College was the first higher education institution in Indiana to allow women to study.
Demographics
The 2000 census found 19,463 people, 6,824 households and 4,872 families living in the city. The population density was 666.5 per km². There were 7,432 housing units at an average density of 254.8 per km². 96.7% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.59% other races and 0.81% with two or more races lived here. Latin Americans made up 1.31% of the population.
The age distribution was as follows: 26.0% were under 18 years of age, 11.5% were between 18 and 24, 29.9% were between 25 and 44, 16.8% were between 45 and 64 and 15.8% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years.
The median income for a Franklin household is $ 45,414. The value for the entire United States is $ 41,994.
