František Fadrhonc (born December 18, 1914 in Nymburk , Austria-Hungary , today the Czech Republic ; † October 9, 1981 in Nicosia , Cyprus ) was a Dutch football coach of Czech origin.

Fadrhonc grew up in Nymburk and graduated from high school there in 1932. He then studied sports pedagogy in Prague and, after graduating, worked as a sports teacher at the Charles University in Prague and at the Masaryk High School. He earned a doctorate. After the Communist Party came to power in February 1948, Fadrhonc emigrated first to Austria and in 1949 to the Netherlands .

Coaching career

In the Netherlands, Fadrhonc trained Willem II Tilburg from 1949 to 1956 , with whom he became Dutch champion in 1952 and 1955. His next stop was SC Enschede , with whom he was first in the table in 1958, tied with DOS . The playoff was lost with 0: 1. 1962 Fadrhonc moved to Go Ahead Eagles Deventer , which he led in 1965 in the final of the Dutch Cup . Although the team lost to Feyenoord Rotterdam , they still played in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965/66 , as Feyenoord was also the Dutch champions. Go Ahead failed in the first round at Celtic Glasgow .

Fadrhonc and Michels in 1974

Fadrhonc took Dutch citizenship in 1966 and became the coach of the Dutch national team in 1970 . Although he was able to qualify for the 1974 World Cup with the Elftal , he was still assigned Rinus Michels as supervisor . Under the Michels-Fadrhonc duo, the Netherlands reached the final, in which they defeated hosts Germany 2-1.

Fadrhonc went to Greece after the World Cup in 1974 and coached AEK Athens , which he led to the UEFA Cup semi -finals in 1976-77. Shortly thereafter, however, in October 1977, he was dismissed after a defeat on the 2nd match day against arch rivals Olympiacos . After a brief stint in Patras as a coach for Panachaiki , he was called back into office by AEK in March 1980, which he held as a fitness / assistant coach until June 1981. In the autumn of 1981 he accepted an offer to Keravnos Nicosia in Cyprus . A win at the start of the season should mean the coach's requiem, as his heart failed two days before the second match day on October 9, 1981.
