Franz von Reichenberg ( August 7, 1855 in Graz - September 29, 1905 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer with a bass voice . He was engaged at the Bayreuth Festival in 1876 and at the Vienna Court Opera from 1884 . He was considered basso profondo (deep bass), but also sang classic baritone and bass-baritone parts

life and work

Franz von Reichenberg was the son of a lawyer and studied singing in Graz. It is likely, but not certain, that Jakob Stolz gave him vocal training. At least he was assisted by Stolz as a répétiteur. The singer made his debut at the Hoftheater in Mannheim in 1873. He was invited by Richard Wagner to take part in the first Bayreuth Festival in August 1876, where he took on the role of Fafner in Rheingold (on the 13th) and in the world premiere of Siegfried (on the 16th). Engagements in Stettin, Frankfurt and Hanover followed.

On March 5, 1881 he appeared at the Vienna Court Opera as Rocco in Fidelio , presumably his debut at this house. Two days later, Sulpice followed in the regiment 's daughter , the next day the king in Verdi's Aida , in the summer of the same year Cardinal Brogni in the Jewess and Prince Walther in Rossini's Tell . After a number of other guest appearances, he was permanently engaged in 1884. From June 1, 1884 to April 30, 1902, Franz von Reichenberg was a member of the Vienna Court Opera ensemble. He took on leading roles there - 73 times Escamillo, 45 times Hermann, 33 times Siegfried-Fafner, 32 times Rocco, 19 times Graf Gormas, 18 times Sarastro, 8 times Hagen or very often Mephisto in Gounod's Faust - but also a large number of middle ones and small batches. "A basso profondo with an unusually powerful voice," says the Austrian Biographical Lexicon , "was able to convince R. as an actor even in smaller roles." He succeeded the bassist Emil Scaria (1840–1986) and shared with his colleague Karl Grengg (1851–1914) carried out the central tasks at the court opera.

In 1901 a mental illness broke out and ended the career of the leading bass player at the Vienna Court Opera.
