history

The Friedenskirche, originally named Johann-Georgs-Kirche after Duke Johann Georg II. Von Sachsen-Eisenach , was built in 1686–93 by Johann Heinrich Gengenbach with the help of Johann Leonhard Reinhold on the Johannisfriedhof as a new cemetery church. To 1691 had Johann Mützel the construction management . The church was consecrated on July 16, 1693. In 1743 it was assigned to the Jena garrison community. Since then it has been called a garrison church . In 1946 it was renamed the Friedenskirche.

Building description

The large hall church has a five-sided choir and a towering, recessed, octagonal choir tower with wide pilasters at the corners. It is covered with a curly hood on which a lantern sits. The church space is divided into a nave , which is flanked by two side aisles and opens to the east through a choir arch , following the width of the nave, to the choir. In 1893 the church was renovated and the interior partially redesigned, in particular the three-sided galleries , which stand on wooden columns with high pedestals and capitals with volutes . The balustrades of the galleries are shaped as multi-layered beams . The ceiling over the galleries has been lowered. The central area of ​​the nave is spanned by a wooden mirror vault , framed with stucco, e.g. Some with ornaments of acanthus and laurel wreaths . The design of the facade corresponded to the need for representation of the ducal residence city of Jena at the time. The facade is divided into two zones, in the lower zone there are wall niches with basket arches , in the upper zone there are broad pilasters and high basket-arched windows. The broad axis in the middle is emphasized by portals , the one in the south is walled up. At the north portal there is a relief from 1743 with a cartouche with the monogram of Duke Ernst August and trophies . The mirror painting created by Jürgen Wegener in 1930/31 is now covered. The polygon of the choir is curved . On stands one's balustrade placed. The pulpit altar from 1835 was simply renewed. Fritz Körner created the colored windows in the choir after 1945. The interior and the church furnishings were originally multi-colored and the columns were marbled. The current white and gray version is from 1960/61.

The church has 13 epitaphs from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In the choir are the epitaphs of the Tannenberger family from the early 18th century with paintings of the Entombment and Resurrection of Christ. On the east side of the nave there is an epitaph for Heinrich Wismar and for Balthasar Beyer and his wife. An epitaph for Franz von Witzendorf is attributed to Johann Samuel Nahl . Eight portrait paintings by Jena clergy from the 17th and 18th centuries come from the Michaeliskirche . The organ with 28 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal , was built in 1910 by Wilhelm Sauer . 1950 was the same organ builder disposition changed.
