Friedrich "Fritz" Aimé Clothar Hugo Graf von Baudissin (born April 3, 1852 at Gut Schierensee ; † February 5, 1921 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was a German admiral and wing adjutant to Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Friedrich belonged to the noble family Baudissin , who originally came from Upper Lusatia and came to Schleswig-Holstein during the Thirty Years' War . He was the son of the post director Wolf Friedrich Ottomar von Baudissin (1812-1887) and his first wife Théonie, born von Mesmer-Saldern (1817-1855).

Military career

Baudissin joined the Prussian Navy on April 15, 1867 . After his basic and ship training on the sailing frigates Gefion and Niobe , he was appointed sea ​​cadet on August 1, 1868 . As such, he was on duty on the schooner Hela , again on the Gefion and on the covered corvette Arcona . Subsequently, Baudissin was transferred to the Gedeckte Korvette Hertha on August 1, 1869 , and was promoted to lieutenant at sea on August 19, 1871 .

On December 11, 1898, as captain at sea (from November 20, 1893), he became the commandant of the Hohenzollern , the yacht of Kaiser Wilhelm II. He held this command until August 16, 1902. At the same time, on July 16, 1899, he was appointed adjutant wing of the Kaiser and promoted to rear admiral on June 22, 1901 . This was followed on April 12, 1904 by his appointment as inspector of the I. Marine Inspection Ostsee in Kiel . In the same year he was then commander of the 1st Squadron of the High Seas Fleet and in this function was promoted to Vice Admiral on January 27, 1905 .

After a commanding service to the Emperor in 1907 and another commanding to service the Naval Staff of the Navy, he was on 27 January 1908. Admiral promoted and at the same time as the successor to Admiral Wilhelm Büchsel appointed Chief of Naval Staff. He held this office from January 29, 1908 to September 5, 1909. In this function, his name is also closely linked to the development of Wilhelmshaven , for example through the construction of the Kaiser-Friedrich-Kunsthalle, which opened in 1913, and the associated association of art lovers for Wilhelmshaven. He was made an honorary citizen of the town of Rüstringen , which today belongs to Wilhelmshaven .

After completion of this activity, he was placed at the disposal and at the same time à la suite of the naval officer corps. For his services he was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle , the highest order in the Kingdom of Prussia , on March 4, 1912 . The Baudissin Glacier on the Antarctic island of Heard is named in his honor.

His grave is in the Invalidenfriedhof in Berlin-Mitte . and was marked with a restitution stone after 1989 .

family

Baudissin had married Edith Kinderling (1858-1934) on February 7, 1879 in Kiel. She was the daughter of the German Vice Admiral Franz Kinderling (1820–1895). The marriage resulted in the son Wolf (* 1882) and the daughter Asta (* 1888).
