The Landesliga Württemberg (consisting of four seasons) is the second-highest league of the Württemberg Football Association and the seventh-highest league in the German league system . It was first held between 1945 and 1950. It has existed in its current four-track form since 1978. It is one of three regional leagues in Baden-Württemberg , along with the Baden State League and the South Baden State League .

history

State League Württemberg 1945–1950

For the first time it existed from 1945 to 1950 as a second class league on the same level as the Verbandsliga Südwürttemberg , organized by the then Southwest German Football Association , before it was merged with this to the third class 1st amateur league in 1950 .

The following teams were the founding clubs in the 1949/50 season: TSG Ulm 1846 , Sportfreunde Stuttgart , SV Göppingen , SC Stuttgart , SSV Ulm , SpVgg Feuerbach , VfR Aalen , Union Böckingen and FV Zuffenhausen .

State League Württemberg from 1978

In connection with the league reform in 1978 , which resulted in the almost nationwide introduction of the league as the third highest division, the new Württemberg regional league was introduced in the form of four seasons that still exists today from the 1978/79 season. In 1978 it was located on the fifth league level below the Bundesliga , 2nd League (South), Oberliga Baden-Württemberg and Verbandsliga Württemberg . With the introduction of the third- tier regional league in 1994 and the third league in 2008, it moved one step down in the league pyramid, so that it has since been the seventh-highest division for clubs in the Württemberg league football.

Promotion and relegation regulation

The champions of the four seasons are automatically promoted to the Württemberg Association League. The four runners-up take part in the relegation round to the Association League, in which they initially compete against each other in two knockout rounds . The runner-up, who ultimately prevails, has to compete in another relegation game against the federation league club, which landed there on the relegation place. The normal number of teams per season is 16. If there are more relegated from the association league and promoted from the district leagues than relegated to the district league and promoted to the association league, the number of teams increases, resulting in a "tightened" relegation regulation in the following season comes into play. Here the number of permanent relegated teams increases by the number of teams by which the respective relay exceeds the normal number of 16.
