Gambit - The Master Plan is an American crime comedy from 2012 directed by Michael Hoffman . Cameron Diaz , Colin Firth and Alan Rickman starred in the 1966 remake of The Cherry Bar Girl .

The English art curator Harry Deane wants revenge on his despotic boss Lionel Shahbandar. With his friend, the painter Major Wingate, he plans to sell Lionel a forged painting by Claude Monet . The painting is part of the artist's grain skid series, but has been lost since World War II, as it was part of Göring's looted art holdings in Carinhall . Since the commanding officer at the time was Carinhalls Puznowski, Harry went to a Texan village to visit the young woman of the same name, PJ Puznowski, a worker in a poultry factory and rodeo rider. In Harry's mind, the cheating goes smoothly: PJ is enthusiastic about his suggestion to take part in a scam and earn a lot of money for it, he photographs her with her mother in their trailer in front of the fake picture, publishes the photo as part of a series about the rodeo in the USA in a magazine owned by the publishing house of Lionel, and he comes across the photo with the painting while leafing through the newspaper. Immediately electrified, he lets Puznowski's supposed granddaughter fly in with a picture, Harry checks the picture and finds it real, Lionel accepts the horrific purchase price of 12 million pounds, PJ receives her severance payment of 500,000 pounds and Harry and Wingate not only have a lot Money, but also their revenge. In reality, however, things turn out differently.
Harry finds it difficult to speak to PJ and ends up with injuries as he is knocked down by an admirer of PJ's. The planned photo in front of the Monet painted by Wingate succeeds, but Lionel has no interest in the painting, as he suspects that it is a copy. Harry has a hard time convincing his boss to have PJ and paintings flown to London. Then again, Lionel shows a lot more interest in the unconventional PJ than in the picture. Lionel also makes it clear to PJ that it will not be Harry who will examine the painting, but the German Martin Zaidenweber. Harry was a born loser. Harry manages to talk Martin out of working with Lionel as unfavorable. In addition, he and PJ receive an invitation to a mask festival at which Harry wants to view the painting. Lionel also has a counterpart in the Grainstack series in his possession, which he once snatched from the Japanese television magnate Takagawa at an auction. This television magnate also appears with his entourage at Lionel's festival, because he wanted to enter into a cooperation with the newspaper king, from which Lionel again said goodbye with PJ's help. While Lionel, PJ and the Japanese marvel at the fireworks at the party, Harry builds the fake painting on an easel next to the original counterpart in the Corn Rack series. Shortly thereafter, Lionel, PJ and Martin Zaidenweber appear, who continues to work for Lionel without Harry's knowledge. Martin checks the painting and, to Harry's amazement, confirms its authenticity. Harry then blurs the oil paint on the picture, exposing it to be a fake. Lionel reacts duped and Harry submits his resignation.
A little later Harry, Wingate and PJ are on their way to the airport. PJ says goodbye. Shortly afterwards, Harry and Wingate meet the Japanese: During the fireworks display, Harry had replaced the real Monet hanging on the wall with a fake Wingate. He now has the real Monet with him and hands it over to Takagawa, who was once won over by Lionel at the auction for the painting. In return, Takagawa transfers several million pounds for the real Monet to Harry's secret Swiss account. The revenge on Lionel is perfect. Harry and Wingate leave and are already planning to bring further fakes to the rich man.

Alliance Films bought the rights to the film from FilmNation Entertainment and will release the film under Alliance in Canada , in Great Britain under Momentum Pictures and in Spain under Aurum Productions.
Filming
The film was shot mainly in England , with Heathrow Airport , the Savoy Hotel and The Strand in London as locations, and Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire . Further recordings were made in Albuquerque , New Mexico . Filming began in May 2011 and ended on July 20, 2011.
influence
Ethan and Joel Coen wrote the screenplay for the remake, the original was released in 1966 under the title The Girl from the Cherry Bar . Here played Michael Caine the thief and Shirley MacLaine his assistant. The story was changed so that a fake painting is now to be sold to a collector and no sculpture is stolen from a millionaire. In addition, the plot has been moved to England and does not take place as in The Girl from the Cherry Bar in Arabia or Hong Kong.
Cast
In February 2011 it was announced that Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth had received the lead roles. Diaz got the role as Texas rodeo rider PJ Puznowski and Firth as art curator Harry Deane , who wants to sell a fake Monet . In March 2011 it was announced that Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay will also star in the comedy. Rickman played the rich art collector Lionel Shahbandar and Courtenay played the role of Major Wingate .
Cameron Diaz kept fit from April 2011 in a private gym in South Kensington , in which Prince Harry is also a member. She met the prince several times and has been friends with him ever since. Colin Firth can be seen in a scene without pants, which he was embarrassed to see because his legs were visible. Alan Rickman found it easier to fully bare himself for several scenes.

Gambit celebrated its film premiere in London on November 7, 2012 and was shown in cinemas there from November 21. The film started in Germany on June 20, 2013 in cinemas.

“Hoffman overlooks the breaks and staging friction surfaces of his script. Even more, he completely stomps the charm of the dialogues by trying to find the perfect picture for every word. Simply filming a script is one thing above all: yawning boring. "
