Thanks to his early recognized artistic talent, Eckert was awarded a scholarship to study painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy when he was 18 . When he was twenty he moved to Munich . From there he went on study trips to the Upper Bavarian region, Italy and Switzerland . Then he returned to Düsseldorf , where he attended Johann Wilhelm Schirmer's landscape class from 1850 to 1852 . He then worked as an art teacher and landscape painter in Heidelberg, where he married in 1858. From 1867 he dealt with photography . For landscape painters and architects in particular , he gave photo folders with landscape and architectural photos from Alsace-Lorraine (1871), from the Rhine from Mainz to Cologne, from the Black Forest and the Odenwald , from the palaces of Heidelberg , Bruchsal and Karlsruhe , and from the tombs of the Pforzheim Court Church and - on behalf of the Grand Duke of Baden - from the island of Mainau and from other Baden castles. In 1877 Eckert suffered great financial losses "through adverse circumstances" which forced him to give up photography. He moved to Karlsruhe and worked again as a landscape painter. His interest in folklore made him paint and collect traditional costumes. He also began to produce large models of houses and house complexes for the Grand Ducal Collection in Karlsruhe , including large Black Forest houses with their room furnishings, Black Forest sawmills with their rural surroundings, and a courtyard from the Odenwald. In 1890, by decree of the Grand Ducal Baden Ministry of Justice, Culture and Education, the directorate of the Grand Ducal Ancient Collections gave him the job of collecting Baden folk costumes. This assignment allowed him to undertake nine years of research trips through all parts of the Grand Duchy and preparatory work for the exhibition of traditional Baden costumes and rural household appliances. Eckert died of a stroke in 1901 without an exhibition being organized.
