Georg Oswald von Czettritz

Georg Oswald Freiherr von Czettritz (born August 16, 1728 in Militsch , † May 8, 1796 in Herrnstadt ) was a Prussian officer , most recently a general of the cavalry .

Life

Georg Oswald was the son of Gotfried Oswald von Czettritz (* August 29, 1695; † December 21, 1741) heir to Schwarzenwaldau and his wife Eva Eleonore von Schweinichen from the Gaffron family .

In 1745 Czettritz joined the Dragoon Regiment No. 4 . There he became ensign on September 7, 1746 , second lieutenant in 1749 , captain of staff in 1759 and major on August 17, 1762 . On March 31, 1763 he became a lieutenant colonel and commander of the No. 1 hussar regiment . There he became a colonel on September 12, 1768 and chief of the regiment on September 15, 1770 . On May 20, 1770, he was appointed major general, and on March 3, 1786, he was made lieutenant general .

He earned his first awards in the battle of Hohenfriedberg and Kesselsdorf . In the Seven Years' War he fought near Lobositz , Prague , Kolin , Zorndorf , Liegnitz and Torgau .

In the battle of Reichenbach on August 16, 1762 (his birthday), he and his regiment were able to stop and fight back a corps of cavalry breaking into the flank. For this he was promoted to major by the 5th staff officer and awarded the order Pour le Mérite .

In 1758 he came from Saxony to Silesia to relieve Neisse , when his horse was shot in the battle of Goldberg and he was taken prisoner in spite of violent resistance.

During the War of the Bavarian Succession he was with Prince Heinrich's corps in Saxony and Bohemia . He became a Knight of the Order of the Red Eagle on August 2, 1792 and General of the Cavalry on January 1, 1794. He died in 1796.

Czettritz married Wilhelmina Augusta von Grotthausen on October 20, 1763 . The couple had several children, of which:

  • Sophie Eleonore Wilhelmine (July 1, 1764; † 1815) ∞ Johann Friedrich Ludwig August von Stöffler († July 4, 1796), lieutenant
  • Oswald August (* September 18, 1767; † August 21, 1825) ∞ Ernestine Christian Elisabeth von Czettritz and Neuhaus (* June 28, 1772; † May 14, 1830)
