George Gideon Oliver Osborne CH (* 23 May 1971 in London as Gideon Oliver Osborne ) is a British Conservative Party politician and was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the government of David Cameron . Cameron's successor Theresa May dismissed Osborne on July 13, 2016 and replaced him with Philip Hammond .

George Osborne is the eldest son of Sir Peter Osborne, 17th Baronet of Ballintaylor and Ballylemon. He studied modern history at Magdalen College of the University of Oxford . During his studies he was a member of the exclusive Bullingdon Club . and he worked as editor of the student magazine Isis . In October 2005 an incident hit the headlines of the British press, which is believed to have happened in 1993: Jennifer Shackleton stated that she had used cocaine with Osborne at the time and presented photos as evidence. Osborne denies using cocaine. David Cameron faced similar allegations before his election as chairman of the Conservative Party.

Political career

During the BSE crisis in the mid-1990s, Osborne worked as an advisor to the UK Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. From 1997 to 2001 he served as speechwriter and secretary to the then Chairman of the Conservative Party, William Hague . In June 2001 he was appointed as a deputy for the constituency of Tatton in the county of Cheshire in the House of Commons voted. At the time he was the youngest member of the Conservative Party in Parliament. In the elections to the House of Commons in 2005, he was re-elected with 51.8% of the votes cast. Subsequently, at the age of only 33, he was given responsibility for finance in the shadow cabinet . Since then Osborne has u. a. interested in the idea of ​​a flat tax .

After the conservatives won the general election on May 6, 2010 , he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was thus a member of the first cabinet under Prime Minister David Cameron.

As Chancellor of the Exchequer, Osborne pursued a consistent policy of restructuring and austerity in order to restore the competitiveness of the country, which was in a deep recession in 2008/09. Great Britain's economic recovery was seen largely as a result of its financial and economic policies; The Times newspaper therefore voted Osborne “British of the Year 2013”.

In August 2014, due to the ruling of the European Court of Justice, the reference in the Google search index for the terms George Osborne, brother, Islam ' or variations thereof to the Wikipedia article, in which the conversion of George Osborne's brother to Islam was mentioned, was removed.

In an interview with the BBC on March 24, 2015, Prime Minister David Cameron named Osborne as one of his possible successors to the post of Prime Minister (alongside Theresa May and Boris Johnson ).

After the general election on May 7, 2015 , which was won by the Conservatives, Osborne was reappointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Cameron's second government .

Osborne was one of the most committed advocates for staying in the EU in the pre- referendum campaign on whether to remain in the European Union . He warned of the incalculable costs of a “ Brexit ” and was therefore accused by Brexit supporters of scaremongering .

After Theresa May was appointed Prime Minister, George Osborne was replaced as Chancellor of the Exchequer by former Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond . As part of the Resignation Honors of former Prime Minister David Cameron, Osborne was named Companion of Honor .

On April 19, 2017, it was announced that Osborne no longer wants to run in the upcoming election . He will for the time being ("for now") withdraw from the House of Commons. He has been editor of the Evening Standard since May 2017 .

Osborne reappeared politically from June 2019. First, he spoke in the Conservative Party's internal area code for the election of Boris Johnson as Theresa May's successor ; later it became known that Osborne was actively seeking support to succeed Christine Lagarde as Director of the International Monetary Fund . Johnson spoke out in favor of Osborne's choice. Ultimately, however, the nomination deadline was missed and Osborne had to give up his ambitions for the post a little later.

Private

Osborne was married to author Frances Howell until July 2019 and has two children. You have a cat named Freya , who was Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office from 2012-2014 . In April 2016, he published that his income in 2015 was £ 126,528 after tax. He received his salary from three sources in 2017: as head of the London Evening Standard , as a member of the House of Commons (annual salary: € 86,000) and as a consultant for the US investment firm BlackRock (annual salary: € 750,000).

Osborne found out late that he was Jewish because of his family origins .

In July 2019, it was announced that Osborne and his wife were getting a divorce.
