Gerardo Fabián Barbero (born August 21, 1961 in Lanús , Argentina , † March 4, 2001 in Budapest ) was an Argentine grandmaster in chess .

Barbero finished fourth in the U18 World Youth Championship in 1978 . In 1984 he won the Argentine championship . In the Chess Olympiads in 1978 in Buenos Aires (in the second Argentine team), 1984 in Thessaloniki , 1986 in Dubai , 1,988 in Thessaloniki, 1990 in Novi Sad and in 1994 in Moscow he played for Argentina, he also won with Argentina in 1985, the Pan American Team Championships in Villa Gesell and took part in the team world championship in Lucerne in the same year . In 1986 he received the title of International Master   and in 1987 that of a Grand Master.

He played for several clubs in Switzerland and Austria:

  • 1998–2000 Chess Club Bern
  • 1989–1996 Inter Salzburg
  • 1997-1998 SC rats

Since 1986 he lived in Budapest, was married to Dr. Katalin Molnar and had a son Janos Americo. Gerardo Barbero died of cancer in 2001.
