Gerhard Müller-Menckens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard Georg Müller-Menckens (born March 14, 1917 in Bremen ; † August 13, 2007 in Bremen) was a Bremen architect and university professor . Müller-Menckens helped shape the cityscape of Bremen during its reconstruction, in the areas of urban expansion and through the modernization of historical buildings. He is considered a representative of traditionalist-modernist architecture.

biography

Müller-Menckens, born as the son of a senior building officer, studied at the Technical University of Hanover and from 1939 at the Technical University of Stuttgart under Paul Schmitthenner architecture. Through Schmitthenner (whose assistant Müller-Menckens became after completing his diploma in Stuttgart) and his "Moralische Anstalt", later known as the " Stuttgart School " (in addition to Schmitthenner, Paul Bonatz and Heinz Wentzel were their representatives), arose a great influence in the work of the Bremen architect: simple, well-designed buildings that are based on the local building tradition.

From 1950, Mueller Mencken made as an independent architect in Bremen independently after he had spent ten years in Swabia and his mentor Schmitthenner - because of its work for the Nazis  retired from university teaching -.

1974 Müller-Menckens became a professor at the University of Technology (today University of Bremen ). A few years later he wrote the book New Life for Old Buildings - About the Continuo in Architecture . In it he developed a critical position against certain undesirable developments in late modern architecture, especially against its neglect of the historical heritage. From the mid-1970s onwards, the theoretical underlining of the importance of historical buildings increasingly determined the work of Gerhard Müller-Menckens.

The architect became aware of the general public through his award-winning design for the House of the Bremen Citizenship . The question of how to build on the market, whether traditional and reserved, as Müller-Menckens suggested, or self-confidently modern, as recommended by the award-winning design by Berlin architect Wassili Luckhardt , sparked one of the fiercest architectural debates in the Hanseatic city .

Müller-Menckens was married to Maria Müller-Menckens. This marriage resulted in two sons and two daughters. The former home and office is located in Bremen- Schwachhausen .
