action

After spending three years in prison for a crime she did not commit, the pretty Gloria in her late thirties is released. She returns to her then boyfriend, gangster Kevin, in New York. In all this time she has not betrayed him, although he has not visited her once in prison. When it turns out that she can't even count on adequate payment for her silence, she finally breaks with him.

Meanwhile, Kevin has completely different worries. Because the accountant Jack Jesús Nuñez has just tried to blackmail him and his boss Ruby with a floppy disk on which important information about the gangster organization is stored. Nuñez can just hand over the disk to his six-year-old son Nicky before the killer Sean makes short work of Nuñez and his entire family . But Nicky and his floppy disk also get into the hands of the criminals.

Gloria shows up at the gangsters' apartment when they are discussing whether they should also kill little Nicky now that they have the diskette. But that arouses maternal instincts even in Gloria, who says of herself that she doesn't like children. Full of annoyance at her former boyfriend, she grabs the boy, keeps her former accomplices at bay with a weapon and escapes with the child, who first got the disk back.

Now the unequal couple begins a rapid escape through New York, on their heels half the New York underworld and some corrupt police officers and business people, against whom the two have no chance in the end. When Nicky falls back into Kevin's hands - albeit without a diskette - Gloria decides to take one last desperate step. She gets in contact with gang boss Ruby, her former lover, and makes a deal with him: Nickys and her life against the floppy disk. Only when he accepts, the spook is finally over.

In the end, Gloria the nosy little asthmatic Nicky grew so fond of him that she kidnapped him from the convent school, where she was able to place him at the instigation of a priest, and wanted to start a new life with him.

Reviews

TV Movie 16/1999 wrote that Sharon Stone was "breathtakingly sexy" but criticized the script. Cinema 8/1999 described the film as "ridiculous". TV Spielfilm 16/1999 wrote that the remake was worse than the original.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the character of Gloria could not be seen as "realistic". He praised the portrayal of Jean-Luke Figueroa but criticized several other portrayals such as those of Jeremy Northam, George C. Scott and especially those of Sharon Stone, which would make the film "involuntarily funny".

Awards

Sharon Stone was nominated for her portrayal of Gloria in the category “Worst Actress 1999” at the Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony on March 25, 2000 . In 1995 and 2007 she won the title, but that year she had to hand it over to Heather Donahue .
