Franciscus Gomarus
Franciscus Gomarus (also François Gomaer ; born January 30, 1563 in Bruges , † January 11, 1641 in Groningen ) was a Flemish Reformed theologian and professor in Leiden , Saumur and Groningen.
Life
The son of Franz Gomarus and his wife Johanna Moermans experienced the first years of his life in his hometown of Bruges. His parents had adopted the Protestant faith and, like many Flemish compatriots, fled to Germany around 1578. Here they hoped to be able to lead a life in the Palatinate without persecuting their faith . Soon afterwards he went to Strasbourg , where he was tutored by Johannes Sturm and made familiar with the ideas of Johannes Calvin , as whose staunch supporter he later established himself. In 1580 he completed a further education at the Casimirianum Neustadt , where important Reformed theologians such as Zacharias Ursinus , Girolamo Zanchi and Daniel Tossanus (1541-1602) imparted extensive theological foundations to him.
After another stay in 1582 at the University of Oxford in John Rainolds at the (1549 to 1607) and 1583 University of Cambridge in William Whitaker , where he obtained the degree of Master of philosophical sciences, he continued his studies in 1585 at the University of Heidelberg in Johann Jakob Grynaeus , Daniel Tossanus the Elder , Georg Sohn (1551–1589) and Franz Junius the Elder left . After completing his studies, he became pastor of the Dutch community in Frankfurt am Main in 1587 . Because he had taken a wife outside of the city, he was forbidden to stay in Frankfurt in 1593. So he went to Hanau and received an appointment as professor of theology at the University of Leiden on January 25, 1594 .
For this purpose he went to Heidelberg again, where he received his doctorate in theology on March 14 of the same year . At the Leiden University he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater from 1597 to 1599 . In 1611 he resigned from his professorship in Leiden, as he was dissatisfied with the attitude of Konrad von der Vorst and had to fight off constant hostility from Jacobus Arminius since 1603 . Already at the disputation in The Hague in 1609 he appeared against Jacobus Arminius and his followers. From 1615 Gomarus taught at the French academy Saumur until he was appointed first professor of theology at the University of Groningen in 1618 , where he stayed until the end of his life in 1641. In 1633 his revision of the Dutch translation of the Old Testament was published.
He also took part in the Dordrecht Synod in 1618/19 and enforced the confirmation of the strictly Calvinist line in the doctrine of predestination and the exclusion of the Remonstrants from the Reformed Church. The Contraremonstranten called opponents of Arminianism was also called Gomarists after him.
