Life

At the request of his father, Guido Mangold left secondary school at the age of 14. He completed an apprenticeship as a baker in his father's business in Ravensburg and attended the confectionery college in Stuttgart. After an apprenticeship in Ludwigsburg and a hotel in Bern, he emigrated to Vancouver (Canada) in 1954 . There he worked as a pastry chef in a grand hotel.

Mangold began taking photographs while he was still a pastry chef in Germany, and in Vancouver he acquired further knowledge by helping out in a portrait studio. His pictures won the first three prizes in a Kodak photo competition (the pictures were submitted anonymously), and Mangold turned entirely to photography.

In 1957 Guido Mangold returned to Germany to study photo journalism with Otto Steinert at the School for Art and Crafts (Saarbrücken) . Then in 1958 he switched to the Folkwang School in Essen with Otto Steinert , which he completed in 1960 with an exam and the Folkwang performance award. Then he was hired as a theater photographer at the city stages in Essen .

From 1961 he worked as a photographer for the United States Information Service ( USIS ) in Bad Godesberg. In 1962 he left USIS to travel to Southeast Asia for several weeks on behalf of the aid organization Misereor and document the local lifestyle there. After a photo spread in the magazine contrasts was Willy Fleckhaus aware of him, and Guido Mangold received 1963 a staff contract with the magazine Quick (editor in chief Karl-Heinz Hagen, chief layout artist Willy Fleckhaus) for which he worked as a photo journalist traveling the world.

After Quick was sold, Guido Mangold worked as a freelancer for German magazines from 1966: twen , Eltern , Playboy , Jasmin , Stern , from 1976 for GEO and Merian , for which he also published illustrated books and since 1993 for Focus . For advertising productions he was a. a. active for Coca-Cola , Stuyvesant , Camel as well as for manufacturers of cosmetics and fashion.

Guido Mangold has been married since 1961, has two daughters (* 1962, * 1966) and lives in Ottobrunn near Munich.

His early black and white photographs of the industrial landscapes in the Ruhr area and his portraits are still influenced by the strict graphic style of his teacher. An example of this is the portrait of the writer Annette Kolb , whom he visited in Paris in 1959 and which was awarded a prize at the 1960 Milan Biennale. Mangold's imagery developed further towards the style of life photography, which documents the living conditions of people in psychologically impressive portraits.

Mangold's international breakthrough as a press photographer came with the report on John F. Kennedy's visit to Germany (summer 1963).

His snapshots of politicians such as Konrad Adenauer , John F. Kennedy or Willy Brandt often go beyond the fleeting nature of daily reporting and have become documents of their time. Mangold's nudes from the 1960s and 1970s appeared on the covers from Stern to Playboy or were enclosed with the magazines as nude posters. He is considered the discoverer of the legendary cover girl Uschi Obermaier , whom he photographed three times for twen. Further portrait series are dedicated to German and American Pop Art artists such as George Segal , Duane Hanson , Alex Colville, Joseph Beuys and Georg Baselitz .

The arrival of color photography in the print media also brought about a change in the choice of his subject matter for Mangold. The travel report and the landscape portrait became increasingly important. On behalf of Geo and Merian he carried out over 70 reports and produced numerous books.
