Gustav Eisentraut

Gustav Eisentraut (born June 7, 1844 in Bleicherode ; † March 6, 1926 in Kassel ) was a Prussian major general , historical researcher and historian and long-time chairman of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies .

Life

After graduating from secondary school in Magdeburg in 1863 , Eisentraut joined the Magdeburg Artillery Brigade No. 4 of the Prussian Army as a flag junior . With this he took part in the German War in 1866 as a second lieutenant . He was then transferred to Kurhessen , annexed by Prussia , where he was assigned to the newly formed field artillery regiment No. 11 . In 1868 he was transferred to the (1st) heavy company of the regiment in Kassel, with which he took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . In the Battle of Wörth on August 6, 1870, he was wounded in the right thigh by a rifle shot , but then took part in the siege of Paris after his recovery and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

After the end of the war he became Premier Lieutenant in the 2nd Division of his regiment in Fritzlar , and in 1877 captain and battery chief in the Nassau Field Artillery Regiment No. 27 in Mainz . He then became a teacher at the Kassel War School . From 1884 to 1896 he served as a department commander in the Lower Silesian Field Artillery Regiment No. 5 and then until May 22, 1899 as a colonel and commander of the field artillery regiment "General Feldzeugmeister" (1st Brandenburg) No. 3 in Brandenburg an der Havel . Then Eisentraut was awarded the character as a major general with the statutory board for disposition made.

He took his retirement home in Kassel and devoted himself to studying Hessian history. His special interests were Hesse during the Seven Years' War and prehistoric and early historical fortifications in Hesse, on which he published numerous articles. From 1901 to 1924 he was, as the successor to the senior librarian Hugo Brunner , chairman of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies. Eisentraut died on March 6, 1926 in Kassel.
