Career

Gyula Török started boxing as a teenager. He started first for the Tatabánya Bányász Sport Club , then for Vörös Lobogo Budapest and finally for MTK Budapest . He was one of the outstanding Hungarian boxers of those years even in the junior division. Since 1958 he started with great success at the Hungarian championships for senior citizens. At a height of 1.61 meters, he first started in the flyweight (class up to 51 kg body weight) and from 1961 in the bantamweight (class up to 54 kg body weight).

His international career began in 1959. He started this year at the European Championships in Lucerne , where he defeated the Soviet champion Vladimir Stolnikov in the semifinals . Only in the final did he find his master in the German Manfred Homberg , who beat him on points and relegated him to 2nd place.

In 1960 he celebrated the greatest success of his career at the Olympic Games in Rome . He became an Olympic flyweight champion. Before he could take this success, he had to beat five strong competitors. He won over Lasso Mesa from Spain by knockout in the first round, over Rocco Gattelari from Australia (5: 0), Miguel Angel Botta from Argentina (5: 0) and Abdelmoneim El-Guindi from Egypt (4: 1) on points . In the final battle he had to break the toughest resistance against Sergei Siwko , the Soviet starter, before he was declared winner of the points with 3-2 judges' votes and was Olympic champion.

In 1961 he started bantamweight at the European Championships in Belgrade . He won his first fight there against Johansen from Norway , but lost in the quarterfinals against Primo Zamparini from Italy and came in 5th place.

In 1964 Gyula Török tried his luck again at the Olympic Games in Tokyo , but already lost his first fight by technical knockout in the 2nd round against Oleg Grigoryevich Grigoryev from the Soviet Union when he was unable to continue boxing because of a gaping eyebrow injury did not even reach the round of 16. Together with the losers of his round, he came in 17th place.

In 1966 Gyula Török ended his boxer career. He completed training as a trainer and became a trainer at Csepel Budapest .
