Also known as the Loreley of the Edertal , it is part of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park , but not part of the primeval beech forests and old beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe .

geography

location

The Hagenstein is located in the northwest of the Kellerwald in the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park , which is part of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park . It rises 1.3 km north-northeast of Schmittlotheim and 1.1 km (as the crow flies ) southeast of Kirchlotheim , both of which belong to the municipality of Vöhl . The Eder flows past the Hagenstein and both villages to the west .

Natural allocation

The Hagenstein belongs in the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34) and in the main unit Kellerwald (344) to the subunit Große Hardt (344.3). It drops steeply to the west into the Lotheimer Täler (344.51) natural area with the Eder flowing there, which is part of the Niederkellerwald subunit .

Loreley of the Edertal

Because the Hagenstein slopes steeply to the west with a height difference of about 127 m into the valley of the Eder , it is popularly known as the Loreley of the Edertal . To the east the landscape goes relatively flat upwards into the mountain or the forest area Im Gebrannten ( 464.8  m altitude; also part of the Ederhöhen).

geology

The Hagenstein consists of Kulmgrauwacken and Kulmton slates . It was created as the impact slope of the Eder, which cut into the underlying rock due to uplift in the cellar forest. Opposite on the Gleithang lies the Mönchsfeld with its fertile loess deposits of the Eder. It was managed by the Cistercian monks of the Haina monastery in the Middle Ages .

flora

Oak , beech and cripple forest grows on the steep western slope of the Hagenstein . There are also several log heaps there . Numerous rare plants grow here such as the knotty grass lily , large-flowered foxglove , swallowweed , loquat and rare wild roses . These forests are similar to primeval forests. Otherwise, middle to old beech forest grows.

Protected areas

Even before the expulsion of the National Park Keller Edersee in 2004 which was on the Hagenstein nature reserve Hagenstein ( CDDA ; 31 -No 4920-401.  Ha in size) was established. Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Kellerwald (FFH no. 4819-301; 58.2261  km² ) and those of the bird sanctuary (VSG) Kellerwald (VSG no. 4920-401; 263.9949 km²) lie on the spur , to which parts of the FFH area Obere Eder (FFH no. 4917-350; 23.3521 km²) and those of the VSG Ederaue (VSG no. 4822-402; 30.9557 km²) connect to the west below the Hagenstein ; is also located in the local valley of the Eder conservation area Auenverbund Eder (CDDA No. 378400;. 1993; 45.0768 square kilometers).

history

A little south of the Sporngifpel of the Hagenstein near the way to Schmittlotheim you can find the remains of a castle from the 8th century, which is known as the castle at the oven . It was created in connection with the Saxon War of Charlemagne and was abandoned before completion because it was no longer needed when Karl won the war against the Saxons. Today only the double moat can be seen.

The name Hagenstein itself dates from Otto von Hagen , director of the Prussian State Forestry Administration between 1864 and 1880. Because in 1866 was to Hesse-Darmstadt belonging former county Ittergau , in the western parts of the basement forest are located, according to the German war of Prussia annexed. Geometers immediately began to measure the newly acquired parts of the country and planned a network of forest roads in the forests, which were built in the western Kellerwald essentially until 1873. On April 27th of this year Graf von Hagen inspected this construction work and was very satisfied with the work done.

In 1892, the foresters Hugo and Brendel left a memorial of that day up on later called Hagenstein and planted some exotic trees on the top of the hill, under there Nordmann fir , Douglas fir , white pine , mountain pine , a barberry , a sour cherry , a copper beech and a sweet chestnut . Since then, the place on the memorial stone and later the surrounding mountain has been called Hagenstein ; it used to be called Bald Corner .

After the construction of the Korbach-Frankenberg railway line , which opened in 1900, the Hagenstein became a popular national excursion destination in the early 20th century. He was regularly visited by Marburg students and Franconian seminarians, among others. Several Sedans celebrations also took place there.

Tourism, hiking and viewing opportunities

The Urwaldsteig Edersee runs over the Hagenstein from Kirchlotheim . It leads past the oak-beech forest and block heaps to the peak of the spur. There are also benches and signposts on site, and there the path bends in the direction of the Hardt (approx.  394  m ), an elevation of the Ederhöhen a little further to the northeast.

A viewing platform was built on the Sporn summit in 2014. From there you can see the Edertal, Schmittlotheim in the south-south-west and Kirchlotheim in the north-west, as well as the Langen Berg ( 413.9  m ) across the river valley in the west , on whose north-east foothills the Mückenburg castle stalls are located.

About 1.7 km (as the crow flies) north-west of the Hagenstein near Kirchlotheim is the Kellerwald National Park Center , where visitors can find out more about the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park .

traffic

West past the Hagenstein on this side along the Eder in its section between Kirchlotheim and Schmittlotheim leads the federal road 252 and across the river between Herzhausen and Ederbringhausen the Untere Edertalbahn .
