Hajo Ortil (born January 10, 1905 in Osterode am Harz ; † July 12, 1983 in Bremen ; actually Hans-Joachim Oertel , also called Big Old Joe ) was a Bremen pedagogue , photographer and author . He was committed to nudism and wrote writings on the subject, which he himself illustrated primarily with nude photos of children and adolescents. A few years before his death, Ortil publicly admitted to having committed sexual acts with numerous underage boys in the course of his life .

biography

Ortil was born in Osterode am Harz in 1905 and studied English for three years at the University of London, then English and sports in Göttingen . In 1916 he joined Alt-Wandervogel and was later a member of the German Freischar . He received his doctorate in 1934 in Göttingen and obtained his doctorate with a philosophical topic on George Berkeley and English literature. He became a teacher for English, philosophy and sports at a grammar school in Bremen.

From 1941 to 1944 he lived in Vienna . There Ortil was a member of a Viennese nudist association and in 1944 he also got to know the German writer Herbert Rittlinger and through him the sport of canoeing .

After the war he became a teacher at the secondary school on Dechanatstrasse in Bremen and in 1958 at the grammar school on Parsevalstrasse.

He made the acquaintance of the writer Hans Leip .

In 1949, Ortil received a Klepper “blue whale” two-fold boat from Rittlinger. On July 23, 1949, he and three young people, led by Herbert Rittlinger and his wife Marianne, set out on a water excursion on the Böhme near Soltau with folding boats and tents. The journey continued via Aller , Weser , Geeste and Hadelner Canal to the mouth of the Elbe near Otterndorf . Ortil referred to the mentioned date as the birth of the Hanseatic pirates . In 1950 he went with Marianne and Herbert Rittlinger on a folding boat tour on the North Sea to Lütje Hörn , southeast of Borkum. Rittlinger reported in detail about this trip in his book Amphibian Journey in words and pictures through his friend Hajo Ortil.

In 1950 Ortil took over the office of chairman of the Bremen naturist association “Bund für Naturgememe Lebensführung e. V. “(BfnL, since 1990 BfFnL, Association for Family Sports and Natural Lifestyle). In addition to his work as chairman, he had also set up a youth group within this association, the “Hanseatic River and Sea Pirates”. These were a mixed group of boys and girls with whom he went canoeing in folding boats and tents . Young people from other places were welcome guests. Ortil was called "Big Old Joe" by those 12 to 18 year olds. The pirate group was the nucleus of the “Landes-Kanu-Verband Bremen e. V. (LKV). "

The trip chronicle of the pirates and the canoeing ring counted hundreds of short, vacation and weekend trips on the tributaries of the Weser, on the heather rivers as well as on the Ems and Hase. Most important, however, were the large-scale summer trips from 1950 to 1975 on rivers and lakes and on the sea coasts at home and abroad. An overview:

  • 1975 Ortil made his last trip with the "sea eagles", a group similar to Ortil's pirates. It was directed by Dietmar Heybey, a teacher from Buxtehude. In 1964, Ortil's pirates and Heybeys sea eagles had already made a trip together, back then to Pantelleria.

In his writings, illustrated with numerous photos, Ortil described the canoeing sport of his “Hanseatic Pirates” with folding boats and tents in connection with naturism . The driving experience and being naked together of adolescent boys and girls, young women and young men, was unusual in the Adenauer period. With the law on the dissemination of writings harmful to minors of 1952 , the Bundestag enforced that writings that advertised nude culture with images were classified as seriously harmful to minors. Ortil's publications have been translated into Dutch, Swedish, English and Danish.

Hajo Ortil's article “Nudist water hiking” can be found in the booklet Aim and Path of German Nudism on pages 52–53. In the essay he presents himself and his Hanseatic pirates in a literary and practical tradition in water sports, which leads from Carl J. Luther (Cil) to Ottomar Krupski and Walter Frentz and Werner Wrage to Ortil's friend Herbert Rittlinger: “With our amphibum [Name of the pirates for Herbert Rittlinger] came a great glow over canoeing. Some poetry, so to speak. And this poetic part was continued by a certain pirate guide named Hajo Ortil, who is by the way the author of this article. “After listing the many destinations of his pirates, Ortil mentions that nudist water hiking is currently being done by other people - A. Siller, Diederichs, Heyde, Suchsland , Masalskis, Walter Bergmann, Bertold Riedmüller - has got off to a great start all over Germany. This subsequently led to the creation of the DFK Canoe Sports Rings, an organizational link between the German Association for Naturism (DFK) and the German Canoe Association (DKV). Ortil's conclusion is: "Canoeing in nudist culture is enjoying a good upswing and has an even more important future ahead of it." - The DFK canoeing rings are still active today.

In his will (1981), Hajo Ortil bequeathed his sexology library, archives and all the photographic material of his pirates to the Brongersma Foundation. This foundation of the Dutch MP Edward Brongersma , known to him , campaigned for the rights of same-sex pedophilia and pederasty in the beginning (1979–1992) . After Brongersma's death in 1998, his foundation was continued under the name “Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Seksualiteit”. Since 1992, the goal has been scientific research into the sexuality of young people. In his 1986 book Loving Boys I , Brongersma quotes Ortil: “I believe during my life I welcomed 800 about naked boys in my bed, all willing to be satisfied and to satisfy me. Now they've all grown to adult men. Not a single of them complained. ”Like other youth movements, Hajo Ortil represented the idea of“ pedagogical eros ”that included sexual acts.

Brongersma and Ortil met in 1965 and have been very good friends ever since. They had common interests, e.g. B. Collections of erotic photos of young people, trips, etc. They often visited and traveled together. In 1968 they spent two months in Sicily, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Portugal and France. The following year they drove together to Troy , which Ortil, as a great fan of Homer , wanted to see at least once. In addition to Hans Leip , Ortil was also in contact with well-known writers such as Werner Helwig , Manfred Hausmann and Ernst Jünger . His friend, education reformers Gustav Wyneken , who was convicted after World War II for sexual abuse of students, he considered naked savages in his book "One hundred. From cheeky and happy rascals ”with a personal dedication on his birthday.

Ortil retired as a high school teacher in September 1967 . In 1975 he decided to make the last trip with the pirates because of his age and poor health.

After that he spent the last years of his life in his Bremen house in old age and with physical decline. Some of his Bremen pirates and several pirate parents were able to give him consolation and help until he died on July 12, 1983.

Hajo Ortil was a respected teacher at his school in Bremen. In 2005, Bremen's mayor Henning Scherf remembered him in a public speech: “All the students knew him and knew that he does everything differently. He always wrote half novels in the class register that had nothing to do with the topic under discussion. He supposedly needed this to legitimize himself before the teaching staff. He opened a big window for me and changed my life. He taught me to talk and write what I thought was right. He was so fair, even if the provocations were directed against himself. ” Heinrich Eichen wrote an obituary for him .
