The Sorrento Peninsula (also Sorrento Peninsula , Italian Penisola sorrentina ) is a peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea in Italy . It is named after its largest capital, Sorrento , and is located between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno . To the west of the peninsula in the Tyrrhenian Sea is the island of Capri .

The peninsula is traditionally used for agriculture ; lemons , oranges , wine and olives are grown , among other things .
The tourism is the main income source of the peninsula. It is very popular with hikers because of the varied landscape with mountains, valleys and cliffs. Because of the steep coast, sandy beaches are hard to find.
Viticulture
White and red blended wines (Cuvées) and sparkling wines ( Frizzante ) are produced under the name Penisola Sorrentina DOC , which have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1994 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014. The wines may be grown and vinified in the following municipalities : Gragnano , Pimonte , Lettere , Casola di Napoli Sorrent , Piano di Sorrento , Meta , Sant'Agnello , Massa Lubrense , Vico Equense , Agerola and in parts of the municipalities of Sant'Antonio Abate and Castellammare di Stabia . There are three sub-zones (sottozone) on the peninsula : "Sorrento", "Gragnano" and "Lettere".
- The white wine must consist of at least 60% of the grape varieties Falanghina and / or Biancolella and / or Greco Bianco , whereby Falanghina must be at least 40%. A maximum of 40% of other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the metropolitan city of Naples may be added.
- The red wine (also as a frizzante ) must consist of at least 60% of the grape varieties Piedirosso and / or Sciascinoso and / or Aglianico , whereby Piedirosso must be at least 40%.
