Hamont-Achel ( Limburgish : Haëmet-Achel ) is a small Belgian town in the north of the Flanders region with 14,369 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It lies directly on the border with the Netherlands and consists of the two districts of Achel and Hamont , which merged in 1977 to form today's city.

Eindhoven is 20 kilometers to the north, Hasselt 36 kilometers to the south, Maastricht 45 kilometers to the south-southeast and Brussels about 90 kilometers to the southwest. The next motorway exits are at Budel and Maarheeze on the Dutch A2 / E 25 motorway . Hamont-Achel has had its own train station on the Rheydt - Antwerp railway line since 2014 .

Eindhoven Airport and Maastricht Aachen Airport are the closest regional airports and there is an international airport near Brussels.

history

On November 18, 1918, two ammunition trains exploded in the village. The explosions also hit three ambulance trains that were carrying German soldiers back from the front lines of the First World War . Parts of Hamont were also destroyed. The disaster claimed over 1,000 lives.
