Hart's Location is a location in Carroll County , New Hampshire , USA . The site is one of the first to announce the results of the New Hampshire primary and presidential election .

According to the 2010 census, the population was 41. Until its incorporation in 2001 it was only a settlement. Hart's location is partly managed by Bartlett , but on the other hand has its own administration and post office.

history

The location of today's Hart's Location was given to Colonel John Hart of Portsmouth , New Hampshire , from whom it got its name. In 1772 it was awarded to Thomas Chadbourne, also from Portsmouth.

In 1826, a rock slide known as Willey's Slide killed Samuel Willey and his family. They fled from home and found refuge in a prepared shelter; the shelter was destroyed while their house, from which they escaped, remained undamaged. This story formed the basis for Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story The Ambitious Guest (1835). In memory of the family, Mount Willey was named after them.

Abel Crawford , after whom Crawford Notch is named, was buried at Hart's Location.

geography

According to the United States Census Bureau , the place has a total area of 48.2 km², all of which is land.

The shape of Hart's Location is strikingly unusual: approximately 17.6 km long and 1.5 miles wide, with crooked borders so that the lower Saco River and US Highway 302 (near the center of town) cross, surrounded by steep slopes on either side Mountains and in some areas cliffs. The anomaly is enlarged on maps showing the county boundaries: Coos County is directly to the east and Grafton County is to the west, but Hart's Location is part of Carroll County, although it is hardly connected to it. Carroll County suggests the shape of a teapot, with Hart's Location as the spout of the teapot.

The highest point in Hart's Location is 1189 m high and is located on the western border of the village, below the 1306 m high Mount Willey . Arethusa Falls , the tallest waterfall in New Hampshire, is located in the neighboring township of Livermore , a well-known hiking location with a connection from US Highway 302 in Hart's Location. The entire place lies in the catchment area of the Saco River .

politics

Federal elections

New Hampshire law allows places with fewer than 100 residents to post election results at midnight and to close them when all voters have cast their ballots. Hart's Location, along with Dixville Notch, is one of two New Hampshire parishes from which the first results of the New Hampshire Democratic and Republican primaries will be announced. That makes them the first in the United States primaries every year . This tradition began in 1948. It is known as the Dixville Notch Practice . Dixville Notch gets more publicity because Hart's Location stopped the practice in 1964 but resumed it in 1996.
