Warren Hastings

Hastings is a city in the Hastings District of Hawke's Bay on the North Island of New Zealand . It is the seat of the Hastings District Council .

Origin of name

The city is named after the British Warren Hastings , who was Governor General of the British East Indies from 1773 to 1785 .

geography

Hastings is about 15 km southwest of Napier and about 10 km from the Hawke Bay coast. The towns of Flaxmere , Havelock North and Clive are in the immediate outskirts of the city. North of the city, the Ngaruroro River flows eastward and flows into the Pacific Ocean 10 km northeast .

climate

The area in and around Hastings has a mild and sunny climate with an average of over 2200 hours of sunshine per year. The annual rainfall is only 800 mm. Hastings is one of the warmest cities in New Zealand and has the highest temperature in all of New Zealand with an average January temperature of 26 ° C (for comparison: Alexandra 23.5 ° C, Christchurch 22.5 ° C). Because the city is not as close to the water as Napier , for example , the cold sea air does not have much influence on the city or the western parts of the district.

history

From 1867 the Māori leased about 70 km² to Thomas Tanner , who, together with other people, called the "12 Apostles", sold the land to European immigrants from 1870 for £ 371  per km².

The city was founded in the 1850s under the name Hicksville . The namesake, Francis Hicks , was one of the city's first settlers. He and his descendants played a key role in building the city, selling land to settlers or releasing land for the train station - now at a price of £ 13,800 / km². In order to follow the political trend of the time, the Hicks family campaigned for Hicksville - as well as Napier (after Charles James Napier ) or Clive (after Robert Clive ) - after a British politician or soldier who cared about the colonial British Empire tried to name. Finally, Hicksville by Warren Hastings in Hastings renamed.

In 1874 the Napier - Hastings railway line was inaugurated and a brewery was opened in the town in 1881, which, together with growing agriculture, especially viticulture, gave Hastings an economic boom. In 1886 there were already 600 landowners.

1918 died during the influenza - pandemic ( Spanish flu ) about 300 people, the Hawkes Bay -Erdbeben of 1931 fell again 93 individuals to the victim. As in most other places in the region, almost all of the city's buildings were destroyed.

The current district was not created until the administrative reforms in 1989. Before that, Hastings was a separate city district with its own city council .

population

In the 2013 census, Hastings , excluding the rural areas, Flaxmere and Havelock North , had 29,454 residents, 2.4% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

Agriculture is particularly favored by the extremely warm and relatively dry climate and the extensive, flat terrain . Orchards and wine-growing areas dominate here. Another important product of the district is honey. The New Zealand headquarters of the "Heinz- Watties " company is located in Hastings and sells tomato sauces and ketchup worldwide under the name " Heinz " .

Infrastructure

Road traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 2 runs directly through the city from Napier in a south-westerly direction. Parallel to this and intended as a bypass of the city center, the New Zealand State Highway 5A from Napier leads north past the city to come back to the State Highway 2 at Paki Paki .

Rail transport

The city's train station is on the Palmerston North – Gisborne railway , which connects Hastings with the economic centers of Wellington , Palmerston North with Auckland and eastwards with the port city of Napier . Since 2001, however, only freight traffic has taken place here as planned .

tourism

Hastings city center is as popular with tourists as Napier's for its Art Deco buildings . Hastings is home to the “ Splash Planet ”, the largest water amusement park in the entire region, which replaced “Fantasyland” at the turn of the millennium.
