Heinrich Adalbert Graf zu Rantzau (born October 27, 1834 in Hohenhain , † July 11, 1891 in Wahlershausen ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Heinrich zu Rantzau came from the house of Oppendorf of the Schleswig-Holstein nobility family ( Equites Originarii ) Rantzau . He was the middle son of Christian Wilhelm Heinrich zu Rantzau (1796-1848) on Danish-Nienhof and his wife Ottilie Agathe Louise Sophie, born von Reventlow (1800-1883). She was a sister of Christian Andreas Julius , Heinrich , Ernst Christian and Friedrich von Reventlou . Christian Karl zu Rantzau was his older brother and Kuno zu Rantzau was his younger brother.

Military career

He attended the Kiel School of Academics and, during the Schleswig-Holstein survey, the Naval Cadet School of the Schleswig-Holstein Navy in Kiel. After the restoration of Danish rule in the duchies, he left Schleswig-Holstein in 1852 and joined the 1st Guard Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army as a grenadier . Promoted to redundant secondary lieutenant in 1853 , he received his regular appointment in 1855. In 1859 he accompanied the then Hereditary Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern to Portugal .

In 1864 he was transferred to the 4th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 24 and fought with it in the German-Danish War in the battle of Missunde and in the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen .

As a captain , he commanded a company in the German War in 1866 in the battles at Soor and Königinhof and in the Battle of Königgrätz . On June 29, 1866, his company captured the flag of the Austrian 6th Infantry Regiment " Coronini " near Königinhof .

During the Franco-Prussian War he commanded a company of the Guards Landwehr Regiment stationed in Graudenz and took part in the sieges of Strasbourg and Paris as well as the battles at Nonancourt , Langey and Droué .

In 1872 he took over the command of the non-commissioned officers' school in Potsdam, and in 1873 he received this regularly.

In 1883 he was regimental commander of the infantry regiment "Grand Duke of Saxony" (5th Thuringian) No. 94 and in 1888 he was promoted to major general, commander of the 55th Infantry Brigade in Karlsruhe .

In April 1890 he was appointed first commanders of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein . According to the judgments of his superiors, he was considered a “well-educated, very capable officer” and a “chivalrous and amiable personality”.

Since 1865 he was married to Marie Elisabeth Anna von Höpfner (born August 25, 1846 in Koblenz, † June 3, 1926 in Preetz ), a daughter of General Eduard von Höpfner . Of the couple's children, Friedrich Wilhelm zu Rantzau (* 1870) and Otto Edmund Christian zu Rantzau (* 1875) also became officers.
