Heinrich Otto (born July 6, 1858 in Wernswig near Homberg an der Efze, † May 13, 1923 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter , draftsman , lithographer , wood cutter and etcher . Along with Ludwig Emil Grimm and Hans Thoma, he is one of the most important illustrators of Romanticism .

Life

For centuries, rural life in North Hesse determined the everyday life of the Otto family. In the first half of the 17th century, part of the von Rockshausen family moved to Wernswig , where they mainly earned their living as day laborers and farmers . Heinrich's father Johannes (1828–1889) worked as a farmer and fruit dealer. In this framework, Heinrich was born on July 6, 1858 as the second child, after his brother Konrad (1857–1911) and before his sister Katharina, by Anna Gertrude (née Scheibeler) and Johannes Otto.

Heinrich Otto was a member of the Schwalm Willingshausen painters' colony , which he attended as a student at the Kassel academy in 1881. At the age of 14 he began an apprenticeship as a sculptor with Joseph Grassegger and then with Heinrich Echtermeyer (1802–1876) in Kassel. In 1878 he was accepted into the sculpting class of Hans Carl Jacob Ludwig Hassenpflug (1824–1890). The young artist then spent two years at the Kassel Academy (now the Kassel Art College ) with Louis Kolitz and Carl Wünenberg .

He moved to Düsseldorf in 1889 and lived across from the art academy in the Eiskellerberg . In Düsseldorf he developed close contact with the artists' associationMalkasten ” and with the Willingshausen painters who were already known to him. From 1898 to 1902 he was director of the paint box . This was followed by stays and study trips to Willingshausen, the Lower Rhine and the Eifel . During this time numerous landscape and genre representations were created in oil . In 1901 Heinrich Otto received the Golden State Medal in Dresden for his lithograph Mondnacht . Since then he has been considered one of the most important German draftsmen and etchers. As a result, his graphics found increasing acceptance in private collections and in many German state copper engraving collections . In 1903 he worked as a painting and drawing teacher for young women in Düsseldorf, where he also taught Henriette Schmidt-Bonn . In the meantime he also lived again and again in Wernswig and Willingshausen. The magazine Die Rheinlande , edited by Wilhelm Schäfer, published images of his work in its first year. In 1904 Wilhelm Schäfer brought out the portfolios of stone drawings by German painters , each of which contained four lithographs by Otto.

During the First World War, Otto took over the farm for his nephew who had been drafted into the war in Wernswig, as his brother had died in an accident in 1911. He had his permanent residence in this place and regularly took part in the artistic exchange meetings of the Willingshausen painters in the Willingshausen painters' room . In Hesse itself he became known nationwide after he had helped design the Hessenkunst calendar of 1920 with a large number of drawings and etchings.

In Willingshausen, and preferably in Wernswig , he tirelessly painted, drew and etched landscapes and depictions of harvests .

Particularly noteworthy are his outstanding work as a draftsman and eraser from this period. His last trip took him to Düsseldorf, where he had meanwhile been appointed art professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Heinrich Otto died there on May 13, 1923 at the age of almost 65 as a result of pneumonia .

Heinrich Otto was a member of the German Association of Artists .
