Wilhelm Thielmann (born March 10, 1868 in Herborn , † November 19, 1924 in Kassel ) went down in German art history as the " Schwalm painter and draftsman ". He was a member of the Willingshausen painters' colony .

Life

His father Ludwig was a postman . His mother Luise Thielmann, née Schleich, recognized Thielmann's talent for drawing, but studying the arts was out of the question for his parents. After secondary school , Thielmann first attended the teacher training college in Usingen and then worked in the Taunus as a primary school teacher in the villages of Anspach , Rödelheim and Eschbach . He composed the Qutschebrüh march during this time. In order to become a drawing teacher, he took leave of absence in 1894 and studied at the arts and crafts school in Kassel . After his excellent final exam, he was employed as a drawing teacher at the arts and crafts school.

In the late summer of 1897 he traveled for the first time to Willingshausen in the Hessian Schwalm , which had been a popular place to study open-air painters since the middle of the 19th century. In 1903 he gave up his profession as a teacher and was the only one of the painters who worked there to settle permanently in Willingshausen. Thielmann began to paint in Willingshausen. At first he lived in the Haaseschen guest house. Wilhelm Thielmann was friends with Carl Bantzer , Hugo Mühlig , Hermann Kätelhön , Adolf Lins , Heinrich Otto , Otto Ubbelohde , Henriette Schmidt-Bonn and Hans Richard von Volkmann u. a. He became the center of the circle of artists and was in charge of the Willingshausen painter's album . In the spring of 1906, Wilhelm Thielmann traveled to Italy and then stayed in Langgöns near Gießen , where he completed the painting Hessian Peasant Woman from Langgöns in Holy Communion . Thielmann learned the etching technique from Heinrich Otto. In 1910 Wilhelm Thielmann lived with the widow of the chief forester Hücker and has since attended the Meininger Musiktage in Marburg an der Lahn. He caricatured Max Reger during a concert. In 1912 he married the doctor's daughter Alexandra Thilenius (born July 4, 1881 in Wiesbaden ; † January 18, 1966 in Willingshausen) from Wildungen , who had become his student the previous year and who later ran a workshop for Schwalm whitework .

Thielmann illustrated for magazines such as the Gartenlaube , the Illustrirte Zeitung and the magazine “ Über Land und Meer ”. He was also in great demand as a portraitist for the Kassel Society. For example, he created the portrait of Johann Lewalter . Thielmann was a sought-after Stammtisch brother of the Kassel Stammtisch by artists and art enthusiasts of the Pvunzel restaurant and the Raabe Society in the Wirtshaus zum Wilden Wasser. On behalf of the city of Kassel, he created the painting Philipp the Magnanimous returns to Kassel from captivity for the town hall .

Wilhelm Thielmann was exhibited in renowned art exhibitions in Berlin , Darmstadt , Düsseldorf , Dresden , and the 1913 World's Fair in Ghent , Kassel , Cologne , Leipzig , Munich and Wiesbaden . In 1915 his daughter, the painter Marianne , who later married the painter Günther Heinemann , was born. In 1918 Thielmann was awarded the title of professor by the Prussian Ministry of Culture . In the inflation year of 1923, Thielmann began building his studio house in Willingshausen, but died shortly before its completion in 1924 after a stroke at his friend and collector Ludwig Pfeiffer's. As early as January 1, 1925, a memorial exhibition was opened in the Kasseler Kunstverein .

Wilhelm Thielmann's grave is on the Willingshausen cemetery.

Wilhelm Thielmann's drawing virtuosity and sovereign powers of observation were already shown in the pictures from the synagogue, which were created between 1896 and 1899.This unique contemporary document on Jewish worship, which was first published in 1900 by Verlag Heinrich Keller in Frankfurt am Main and reissued in 1991 by the Kassel Municipal Museum . Thielmann became known nationwide as an illustrator of popular family magazines such as Die Gartenlaube and Über Land und Meer . His paintings, created after 1910, are increasingly turning away from genre painting and he includes impressionistic motifs of the Schwalm in his work. In Thielmann's work, the upgrading of light becomes the theme of his painting.

His humor and accurate eye are exemplified in the caricatures of the composer and conductor Max Reger from 1913, published by NG Elwert Verlag, Marburg an der Lahn . From 1905 onwards he created etchings of rural scenes and the rural genre . Thielmann's graphics and painting manifested his deep connection with the landscape and the farmers of the Schwalm. Stylistically based on the naturalism of plein air painting , his painterly mature work clearly tended towards impressionism . It is now evident in the light palette and in the loose, sometimes dabbing brushwork .
