Helloween (also called Mini-LP ) is the first release by the German heavy metal band Helloween .
History of origin
In 1984 the band released two songs (the unused Oernst of Life and Metal Invaders , which was re-recorded for Walls of Jericho ) on the Death Metal sampler . The contract with Noise International came about because of the great public response. The mini-LP followed with Walls of Jericho, the first full album in the same year.
Track list
- Starlight (Weikath / Hansen) - 5:17
- Murderer (Hansen) - 4:26
- Warrior (Hansen) - 4:00
- Victim of Fate (Hansen) - 6:37
- Cry for Freedom (Weikath / Hansen) - 6:02
Music style and lyrics
As on Walls of Jericho , Helloween's melodic and fast style is already fully developed. Kai Hansen's rough vocals contributed to the fact that the songs sounded much harder and less cheerful than on the later Keeper albums.
In the text on Starlight , drug abuse and its consequences are discussed. A sample from the film Halloween III was used for the intro . This contains, among other things, the fictional promotional song Happy Happy Halloween , which is stylistically close to children's music.
Murderer describes the story of a person who kills another person in an affect and is now permanently on the run.
Warrior criticizes the abuse of soldiers as "cannon fodder".
Victim Of Fate is written from the point of view of a person who was born in precarious circumstances and who now uses violence to achieve social advancement, but who internally detests this life.
In Cry For Freedom is called for liberation from religious faith.
Versions
In 1986 a picture disc was released which contained a cover version of White Christmas as a "surprise track" . This re-release contains the piece Murderer in a remix version. An independent CD was only released in Japan, the EP was released on CD in 1988 together with Walls of Jericho . The five songs were also included in The Singles Box (1985-1992) . The cover of this box shows the cover picture of the EP in a slightly enlarged form, the band logo has been changed compared to the mini-LP.
