The Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is the largest commercial airport in Finland . It is located around 17 kilometers north of the center of the capital Helsinki in the city of Vantaa .
The airport was completed for the Summer Olympics in 1951 and replaced the Helsinki-Malmi airport , which was becoming too small . It served over 18 million passengers in 2017 and is one of the largest airports in Northern Europe . The airport, managed by Finavia , has two terminals and three runways . It serves as a home base and hub of Finnair .
Transport links
Since the end of 2015, the airport has been connected to the local rail traffic in the Helsinki region via the newly built circular railway . Depending on the direction of travel, the journey time between the airport and Helsinki Central Station is 27 or 32 minutes. The nearest long-distance train station is in Tikkurila (three stations or eight minutes from the airport).
The airport can also be reached with the buses of the regional transport association HSL , in particular with bus line 615 from the center of Helsinki. Finnair has a direct shuttle bus to central Helsinki. The intercity buses from all major Finnish cities have a direct connection to the airport.
Airport facilities
Runways
The airport has three runways:
- 04R / 22L (runway 1, 3440 m × 60 m), the main runway, was completely overhauled and modernized in summer 2005.
- 15/33 (runway 2, 2901 m × 60 m), the cross or side runway, was completely renovated in summer 2004.
- 04L / 22R (runway 3, 3060 m × 60 m), the new runway parallel to the main runway, went into operation on November 28, 2002.
Terminals
In August 2009, the previously existing separation between an international terminal and a domestic terminal was lifted. The neutral terms Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are now used. Both terminals are around 250 m apart and are connected by a corridor. Since then, flights have started and landed at both terminals regardless of their destination. The allocation to the halls designated as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 depends on the airline operating the respective flight. Free WiFi is available for travelers .
In order to cope with the growing number of passengers, the operator Finavia is expanding the airport from 2016. The terminal areas are expected to grow by 45% and the capacity for baggage handling by 50%. The construction work should be completed in 2020. The airport is then planned for 20 million passengers a year.
Airlines and Destinations
Helsinki-Vantaa is connected by several airlines with national, numerous European and also some intercontinental destinations, including Kuopio , Amsterdam , Lisbon , New York , Nagoya , Seoul and Shanghai . The largest local company is Finnair , which is based here . From German-speaking countries, Helsinki is currently served by Lufthansa from Frankfurt am Main and Munich , Germanwings from Berlin and Finnair from Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva , Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart , Hanover, Vienna and Zurich .
