Henk Badings

Henk (Hendrik) Herman Badings (born January 17, 1907 in Bandoeng , Dutch East Indies , † June 26, 1987 in Maarheeze , Province of Noord-Brabant , Netherlands ) was a Dutch composer .

Badings was born on the island of Java in what is now Indonesia . He was one of the leading composers of the 20th century in the Netherlands. In 1930 he studied at the Technical University in Delft and graduated as a mining engineer with summa cum laude . Therefore, he worked as an assistant in the Faculty of Historical Geology and Paleontology . In his free time he occupied himself more and more with music and trained himself further. This was how I came into contact with Willem Pijper , the conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra at the time.

In 1934 he was appointed composition teacher at the Rotterdam Conservatory , and went to the Amsterdam Conservatory the following year . After the German occupation of the Netherlands in 1941, he was appointed head of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague by the Dutch collaborators as the successor to the Jew Sem Dresden . He also became a member of the Dutch Culture Council set up by the crew. After the Second World War, he was dismissed as head of the conservatory in 1945 and was banned from working for ten years, which was lifted at the end of 1947. From then on, Bading's work was shaped by the intensive study of electronic music . This led to a considerable number of compositions in this field. He was the head of a science laboratory at Philips, where he received radio and electronic work orders. In 1961, the University of Utrecht appointed him lecturer for acoustics and electronic music.

In 1962 he was appointed professor of composition at the State College of Music Stuttgart appointed. He was also visiting professor at the University of Adelaide Australia and Pittsburgh USA .

Henk Bading's oeuvre comprises around 1000 works, covering almost all areas of compositional work. Initially, his compositions were influenced in style and technique by the French music of the 1920s, which Willem Pijper did well to establish. Later influences of the German late romanticists ( Richard Strauss ) can be felt. From 1950 Badings integrated electronic music into numerous compositions and experimented with a 31-tone system ( contrasts for choir and the string quartet No. 4 ). Throughout all style developments he remained true to the ideals of Willem Pijper and Paul Hindemith .

He has received numerous composition prizes and awards. Since 1972 he has lived modestly and withdrawn near the town of Maarheeze in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant .
