Henning Bernd von der Goltz (born November 9, 1718 in Heinrichsdorf ; † August 30, 1757 in front of Groß Jägersdorf ) was a Prussian major and knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

Life

family

Henning Bernd came from the Neumark noble family von der Goltz . He was the youngest son of the Prussian Rittmeister Henning Bernhard von der Goltz (1681–1734) and his wife Maria Katharina von Heidebreck (1685–1768). He remained unmarried and childless. The Prussian generals Georg Konrad von der Goltz (1704–1747) and Karl Christoph von der Goltz (1707–1761) and Colonel Balthasar Friedrich von der Goltz (1708–1757) were his older brothers.

career

Goltz attended the Pädagogium Halle in 1733 and the secondary school in Jena from 1735 to 1737 .

In 1738 he began his career in the Prussian army as an ensign in the “Kalkstein” regiment , where he was promoted to captain and adjutant general of General Kalkstein at the beginning of the First Silesian War . In April 1741 Glotz was taken prisoner of war in Austria before Grottkau , which lasted until October of the same year. After his release he took up his position as adjutant at Kalckstein again and stayed there until the peace agreement. Even before the outbreak of the Second Silesian War he advanced to lieutenant, he was able to excel as an adjutant in the Battle of Hohenfriedeberg to such an extent that the king promoted him to captain and appointed him to his wing adjutant .

In July 1746 Goltz was awarded the order Pour le Mérite . To get an idea of Russia's preparations for war , Goltz was sent to Livonia by the king in 1748 . In May 1749, Goltz was commissioned with further diplomatic assignments to the courts in Gotha , Weimar , Würzburg , Mainz , Trier , Mannheim and Munster concerning the impending war . In March 1756 he was sent again to Rudolstadt and Sondershausen . As a result he was able to send a Schwarzburg regiment to his king in Potsdam in May . In 1756, before the war broke out, Goltz was promoted to major, sent to East Prussia and placed with General Lehwaldt . Goltz was fatally hit by a cannonball in the battle of Groß-Jägersdorf .

Pauli also referred to Goltz as the intendant of the royal Prussian army . Prince Heinrich of Prussia dedicated a plaque on his Rheinsberg obelisk to him .
