Hermann Heinrich Emil Theodor von Lettow-Vorbeck (born September 16, 1835 in Mallschütz , † February 3, 1913 ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

Hermann came from the Pomeranian noble family Lettow-Vorbeck . He was a son of Johann Lettow-Vorbeck (1787-1855) and his second wife Adelheid, born von Brauneck (1810-1859).

Military career

Coming from the cadet corps, Lettow-Vorbeck was transferred to the Kaiser Alexander Grenadier Regiment of the Prussian Army on April 29, 1854 as a second lieutenant . He rose in January 1861 first lieutenant and the same year was as from mid-August adjutant of the 2nd Guards Infantry Division commanded. When he was promoted to captain on November 7, 1865, he was transferred to the 1st East Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 1 "Crown Prince" as a company commander . Lettow-Vorbeck led his company in 1866 during the war against Austria in the battle of Trautenau , was seriously wounded and was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class with swords.

After the war he was assigned to the War Ministry at the beginning of February 1867 and was transferred here on April 30, 1867. As a major , Lettow-Vorbeck took part in the war against France in the mobile staff of the War Minister von Roon in the King's headquarters in 1870/71 . He fought at Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan and in front of Paris and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class.

After the peace treaty , Lettow-Vorbeck accompanied the emperor to Bad Ems and Bad Gastein in the summer of 1872 . In mid-June 1873 he then resigned from service with the appointment of battalion commander in the 3rd Pomeranian Infantry Regiment and rose to lieutenant colonel in July 1875 . From October 28, 1875 to November 5, 1879 Lettow-Vorbeck was active as commander of the Fusilier Battalion in the 1st Guards Regiment on foot . He was then commissioned as a colonel under position à la suite with the command of the 3rd East Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 4 and on January 13, 1880, he was appointed commander of this regiment. This was followed from July 7, 1883, as commander of the 4th Guards Regiment on foot , until he was assigned to command the 62nd Infantry Brigade in Strasbourg on March 26, 1885 under position à la suite . With his promotion to major general on September 16, 1885 Lettow-Vorbeck became the commander of this brigade . On August 2, 1888, initially charged with the command of the 19th division in Hanover , he was finally appointed commander of this large formation on September 19, 1888, with a promotion to lieutenant general . In this position, he was awarded the Grand Duke Peter II. , The Honorary Grand Cross of the Oldenburg House and Merit of the Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig . On January 5, 1892, Lettow-Vorbeck was transferred to the officers of the army and on January 23, 1892, the statutory pension was made available for disposal . On the occasion of his farewell, Kaiser Wilhelm II awarded him the Order of the Crown, First Class, and on September 12, 1895 gave Lettow-Vorbeck the character of General of the Infantry. In addition, on April 29, 1904, he received permission to wear the uniform of the Emperor Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1.

After he said goodbye, he lived on his Reetz estate .

family

Lettow-Vorbeck married Hildegard von Selchow (* 1845) in Berlin on January 7, 1867 . The following children were born from the marriage:
