geography

Geographical location and traffic

Hetzdorf lies on the edge of the lower Osterzgebirge in the valley of the lower Flöha , which separates the two districts from each other. The part belonging to Falkenau (Flöha) with the train station is on the left, the part belonging to Breitenau (Oederan) in the Hetzbachtal on the right bank. Since the closure of the Hetzdorf – Eppendorf – Großwaltersdorf narrow-gauge railway , the Hetzdorf (Flöhatal) station has only been served by the standard-gauge Reitzenhain – Flöha line.

Neighboring places

Neighboring towns of Hetzdorf are Falkenau in the north, Breitenau in the east, Lößnitztal and Metzdorf in the southeast, Hohenfichte in the south, Grünberg in the southwest and Plaue in the west.

history

The first recorded place name form of the settlement at the confluence of the Hetzbach in the Flöha dates from 1378 as Heczelstorf . Later place names are Etzilstorf undir Schellinberg liein (1382), Hetzelsdorff (1445), Hetzdorff (1501) and Hetzdorf (1540). The origin and interpretation of the name are unclear. The Waldhufendorf belonged to Schellenberg Castle around 1378 . In 1551, Hetzdorf is documented as an official village of the Schellenberg Office, which was renamed " Augustusburg Office " in 1590 . By the Saxon rural community order of 1838 the place became an independent municipality. In 1856 the jurisdiction of the place was transferred to the Oederan court office . Since 1874, Hetzdorf has belonged to the newly founded Amtshauptmannschaft Flöha .

The four great arches of the Hetzdorf Viaduct

The place experienced an increase in importance in the middle of the 19th century with the construction of the railway. The Dresden – Werdau railway line, opened in 1869, crossed the Flöhatal in the local area via the famous Hetzdorf viaduct . With a height of 42 m it was the highest one-story (one-story) bridge of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. With a total of 17 arches, it has a length of 328 m. In 1875 the Reitzenhain – Flöha railway through the Flöhatal was opened, although Hetzdorf initially did not have its own train station. When planning the Hetzdorf – Eppendorf narrow-gauge railway , the Hohenfichte station about 1.7 km to the south was initially intended as a connecting station . Due to the more favorable location, it was decided during the construction of the narrow-gauge railway for the current location on the left bank of the Flöha near the Hetzdorf Viaduct, which is about 1.2 km down from the point where the narrow-gauge railway met the standard-gauge railway . The opening of the narrow-gauge railway and the “Hetzdorf bei Oederan” stop took place on November 30, 1893. In 1905 the Hetzdorf stop was upgraded to Hetzdorf (Flöhatal) station .

In 1927 the municipality of Hetzdorf on the right of the Flöha was incorporated into Breitenau . The part to the left of the Flöha with the train station belonged to Falkenau . Through the second district reform in the GDR , Hetzdorf came to the Flöha district in the Chemnitz district in 1952 (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ).

On November 6, 1967, passenger traffic and on January 1, 1968 freight traffic on the narrow-gauge railway to Eppendorf were shut down. As a result, the station lost its importance, and at the same time, with the dismantling of the narrow-gauge railway, some standard-gauge tracks were removed. Changes also occurred on the Dresden-Werdau railway line during the GDR era . The Council of Ministers of the GDR decided on January 10, 1986 to bypass the old curved route with the Hetzdorf viaduct in the course of straightening the route with a 2,033.9 m long and up to 16.8 per thousand steep new line and to shut down the viaduct for rail traffic. In the course of straightening the route , two prestressed concrete bridges, each 343.65 m long and up to 34.50 and 36.50 m high, were erected. The new line section went into regular operation on May 12, 1992, initially on a single track. The section with the old bridge was closed on the same day. The second track was put into operation on May 30, 1992. In the following years , the viaduct was secured by ABM workers and prepared as a hiking trail. Since then it has been part of the Ostsee-Saale dams long-distance hiking trail between Oederan and Augustusburg .

After German reunification , Hetzdorf belonged to the district of Flöha as part of the municipality of Falkenau and Breitenau from 1990 . With this, the places came to the district of Freiberg in 1994 and to the district of central Saxony in 2008 . The Breitenau part of Hetzdorf (right Flöhaufer) has belonged to the city of Oederan since the incorporation of Breitenau in 1997. The Falkenau part of the municipality (left Flöhaufer) came to the city of Flöha in 2011 with Falkenau.

Hetzdorf station (Flöhatal) after the narrow-gauge railway was dismantled

State road 237 from Falkenau to Eppendorf runs through the village in the Flöhatal . In the village, the district road 7706 branches off through the Hetzbachtal to Breitenau and Oederan.

In Hetzdorf, the Dresden – Werdau railway line crosses the Flöhatal in two arched bridges as part of the Saxon-Franconian Magistrale . Until 1992 the route ran over the famous Hetzdorf viaduct. The disused route over the bridge has been a cycling and hiking trail ever since.

The "Hetzdorf (Flöhatal)" station is now used as a crossing station for the Erzgebirgsbahn on the Flöha-Olbernhau railway. Until 1967/68 the narrow-gauge railway branched off at the station through the Lößnitz valley to Eppendorf and Großwaltersdorf.
