Houverath is a district of the city of Erkelenz in the district of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia . To the west of the village is the hamlet of Houverather Heide.
geography
Houverath is on the western edge of the Erkelenzer Börde . In the east, the Baaler - Wassenberger Riedelland extends as a narrow band between the Börde and the Rurtal .
location
In the north lies Golkrath , in the northeast Matzerath , in the east Haus Hohenbusch , in the southeast Hetzerath , in the south Doveren , in the southwest Hückelhoven and in the west Kleingladbach . The last three places belong to the city of Hückelhoven.
In the south of Houverath the road Erkelenz-Hückelhoven leads past the village. The A 46 motorway runs parallel to this, with the Hückelhoven Ost junction to the south .
Type of settlement
Houverath was a street village in the 19th century . The settlement stretched along today's street "In Houverath". Individual farmsteads stood along the “In der Vore” street.
Noteworthy is a farmstead surrounded by a moat, which is still marked on the Tranchot map and corresponds to the approximate location of today's “Püllenhof”.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1262. However, since noble lords of the Middle Ages used to name themselves after their ancestral seat, one can assume that Houverath is even older. In a document from 1259, which comes from the former Wassenberger Stift, is the note:
1259, mense Augusto. Waleramus dux Lemburgensis gives the cleric Heinrich, son of Sibertus de Hugenrode, who renounces 20 acres of land near Ursbec, the Wassenberg fiefdom, and 16 other acres near Wassenberg. - Perg. Or. 3 p. (From).
It follows that the above-mentioned cleric Heinrich de Hugenrode is the son of Sibertus de Hugenrode and therefore Houverath was the ancestral seat of this family well before 1259.
In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, Houverath was part of the Kleingladbach court, which belonged to the Wassenberg office of the Duchy of Jülich . During the French occupation from 1794 to 1814, Houverath was assigned to Mairie Kleingladbach in the canton of Erkelenz. From 1815 under Prussian rule, the village remained in the mayor's office of Kleingladbach in the district of Erkelenz . On October 1, 1935, Houverath and Houverather Heide ( 51 ° 4 ′ 24 ″ N , 6 ° 14 ′ 30 ″ E ) were added to the newly founded community of Golkrath. This community belonged to the office of Erkelenz-Land.
On January 1, 1972, the community of Golkrath, to which Houverath belonged until then, was incorporated into the city of Erkelenz.
